Speaking on national television on October 25, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich estimated the direct cost of the war in the Gaza Strip to Israel at about $246 million per day.
This figure does not include indirect costs, including losses from the partial paralysis of the economy caused by the massive mobilization of military reserves and damage from rocket fire by Hamas forces.
For this reason, Minister Smotrich said that the 2023-2024 national budget is "no longer appropriate". He emphasized that Israel needs to revise its budget plan to balance the spending arising from the war in the Gaza Strip.
Previously, on October 24, credit rating agency S&P downgraded Israel's economic outlook from "stable" to "negative".
Commenting on the issue, Mr. Smotrich said that this was "alarming" information and that he did not foresee a large deficit for Israel during this crisis. However, Mr. Smotrich described the current situation as so tense that the financial issue "is not an immediate priority to solve."
The Israel-Hamas conflict flared up again on October 7 after Hamas fired thousands of rockets at Israel. The fighting over the past three weeks has killed more than 6,500 people in the Gaza Strip and more than 1,400 in Israel. Israeli officials say this will be a war that will last for months.
