Israel claims to have defeated Hezbollah

(CLO) Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz declared that his country had defeated Hezbollah, emphasizing that the elimination of leader Hassan Nasrallah was the greatest achievement.

"Now our task is to continue to apply pressure to bring about the fruits of that victory," Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said at a ceremony at the Israeli Foreign Ministry on November 10.

Mr. Katz added that Israel has no interest in interfering in Lebanon's internal politics because Israel has "learned its lesson." He also expressed hope that the international coalition will seize this opportunity politically and that Lebanon will join other countries in normalizing relations with Israel.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike on September 27 when the Israel Defense Forces attacked the group's headquarters south of Beirut.

Late last month, the Israeli military also said it had killed Hashem Safieddine, who was expected to take control of Hezbollah after Nasrallah's assassination.

On November 5, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, then announced later in the day that Mr. Katz would replace Mr. Gallant.

The move comes as Israel is engaged in multiple conflicts, fighting Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as exchanging long-range artillery fire with Iran.

Israeli forces carried out airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on November 10, again striking the area where Safieddine was killed last month.
