Grealish will not be participating in the FIFA Club World Cup. |
The move by the Etihad Stadium club all but spells the end of the England player's future. ESPN said Grealish has been given permission to talk to other clubs, and his omission from the Club World Cup squad is the first step towards a move away. The England international still has two years left on his contract with Man City after joining from Aston Villa for a British football record fee in 2021.
Despite being a key player in Guardiola's historic treble-winning 2022/23 campaign, Grealish has slowly lost his place in Guardiola's star-studded squad, especially as Jeremy Doku and Savinho have become increasingly consistent. In the 2024/25 campaign, the former Aston Villa man started just seven Premier League games, scoring one goal and assisting one.
Pep Guardiola spoke after the 2-0 win over Fulham on the final day of the Premier League, confirming that Grealish was no longer a first-choice option in his squad. “For almost two months, there were always five or six players who were not playing. I had no other choice,” Guardiola explained.
However, he also stressed that Grealish is a player with quality but needs to play more regularly, something he has not done in the last two seasons.
Man City will begin their tournament in Florida on June 18, facing Morocco's Wydad AC in Philadelphia.
