Mother Nguyen Thi Nay, in Gia Mon village, Phong Binh commune, Gio Linh district, is one of four Vietnamese Heroic Mothers still living in Gio Linh district. She is 96 years old this year, currently living with her youngest son. Due to her advanced age and weak health, she is no longer clear-headed, sometimes remembering and sometimes forgetting. However, when she sees that her family has members of the Youth Union and young people coming to visit, she seems healthier and talks happily.
Standing next to the altar of her husband and children, Mother Nay tearfully said: “My husband is martyr Nguyen Duc Gia, who died in 1967, and my eldest son is martyr Nguyen Dang Hao, who died in 1971. Over the years, even though I received the news that my husband and children had died, I still longed for a miracle to bring them back.
Now that I am at an old age, I am afraid that miracle cannot happen. But thanks to my children and grandchildren who regularly come to care for and look after everything, I am more excited and healthier." Mother Nay once participated in the resistance war, gathered in the North, carried ammunition, and took care of sick soldiers. After her husband and eldest son died, Mother continued to serve the resistance war and raised her remaining son to adulthood.
Phong Binh Commune Youth Union Secretary Tran Thao said: Phong Binh Commune has 30 Heroic Vietnamese Mothers, currently only Mother Nguyen Thi Nay is still alive. In September 2024, Phong Binh Commune Youth Union organized support for painting and repairing the mother's house within the framework of the program "Wish No. 7"; regularly organized programs "Family meals - warm mother's love" and activities to visit, give gifts, encourage the mother and relatives to improve their lives.
Through these activities, our young generation has the opportunity to express our deep gratitude for the great sacrifices and contributions of Mother to the cause of national liberation as well as in building and defending the Fatherland. We hope that Mother will have good health, enjoy her old age, and encourage her children and grandchildren to continue to promote the precious traditions of the family, strive to study, work, and contribute to building the homeland.
50 years since the country was at peace , the country was unified, and after two wars of independence, Quang Tri - the place that was once a "bomb bag", a "fire pan", a place that witnessed the pain of the division of the two regions - has suffered countless pains and losses. Among them, thousands of mothers have lost their husbands and children forever. To date, the whole province has 2,861 mothers who have been awarded or posthumously awarded the title of Vietnamese Heroic Mother, of which 19 are still alive.
In recent years, in addition to implementing well the policies and regimes of the Party and State, every year, the work of "Repaying gratitude", caring for and supporting mothers has always received special attention from the government, agencies, units and organizations. Notably, there are many meaningful models of youth at the grassroots level with support activities: organizing the program "Family meals - warm mother's heart", visiting, giving gifts, encouraging living Vietnamese Heroic Mothers as well as relatives of the Mothers on holidays and Tet...; providing regular health care, medical examination and treatment, and free medicine for the Mothers; introducing and presenting the book series Vietnamese Heroic Mothers of Quang Tri Province, consisting of 2 volumes, nearly 3,000 pages thick, introducing 2,861 Vietnamese Heroic Mothers in the province, along with activities of offering incense in gratitude, cleaning and repairing houses at the Mothers' families.
In Hai Lang district, the model of "Celebrating Mother's Birthday" of Hai Lang District Youth Union is one of the activities that many union members and youths responded to and were recognized and highly appreciated by the union chapters at all levels. This model has also contributed to improving the spiritual life, bringing joy and sharing to mothers; at the same time contributing to improving the effectiveness ofeducation on traditions, ethics and lifestyle for the younger generation; helping union members and youths to absorb, promote and practice the morality of "When drinking water, remember its source", participating well in the movement of "Repaying gratitude"; deeply expressing the gratitude, gratitude and affection of today's young generation for mothers.
In just a few days, Heroic Vietnamese Mother Dao Thi Vui, in Dai An Khe village, Hai Thuong commune, Hai Lang district, will turn 103 years old. Every year, on this occasion, the members and youth of Hai Thuong commune prepare to celebrate her birthday very thoughtfully. Mother Vui shared: “This concern and care is the motivation for me to continue to live happily, live healthily, and lessen my sorrows.
On holidays, New Year's, birthdays or whenever she needed, there were always members and young people coming to share and chat with her. Mother Vui was born in 1923, her husband and only son sacrificed in two wars for national independence.
Mother herself was also a staunch revolutionary, digging tunnels to hide cadres and was once captured and imprisoned by the enemy. She was awarded the title of Heroic Mother of Vietnam on December 17, 1994 and the Second Class Resistance Medal and the Third Class Independence Medal.
Mother's family was awarded the "Glorious Family Plaque for Fighting America to Save the Country" by the Government. On the day the homeland was cleared of enemies, in the joy of "seeing peace", Mother quietly swallowed her sadness when she could no longer see her husband and children return...
All the Heroic Vietnamese Mothers in the province are at the age of “near death”. Therefore, taking care of and supporting the Mothers is our common responsibility, especially the young generation today.
