After many years of working at the forefront, we, the officers and soldiers, have gained a lot of experience in dealing with storms, but what we care about most, and one could say is our constant thought, is ensuring our children's education.

Reporters can rest assured, people on the mainland can rest assured, thanks to the hands and love of the soldiers, Truong Sa Primary School today seems to be wearing a new shirt, brilliant with flags and flowers. Under the steady sky of Mother Earth, along with the careful preparation of teachers, soldiers and people on the island, we will certainly have a new school year full of excitement and success for the children here.

Teacher Hanh said that out of the 9 students, as of early this morning, 4 students still could not get to the island due to heavy rain and big waves.

Nurturing young children on the island

The new school year brings with it much joy and hope, especially for teacher Le Xuan Hanh, who has devoted his whole heart to the young buds at the forefront.

From the beloved land of Cam Lam, Mr. Hanh wrote a volunteer application to travel hundreds of nautical miles to Truong Sa, where the sea and sky meet, and where aspirations are nurtured. After 15 years of working with students in the highlands, 7 years before retirement age, he still determined to go to the island, carrying with him his love for the profession, love for children and the desire to contribute.

Lieutenant Colonel Diep could not hide his emotions when talking about teacher Hanh: “The whole island has 9 students, studying from kindergarten to grade 5. Nine innocent faces, we feel every day, that is the precious asset of Truong Sa Primary School and of teacher Hanh. He loves the children like his own children; he takes care of every sleep, every meal.

And you know, Truong Sa is a place of constant storms, but even during the summer vacation, no matter how the storms separate us, the teacher always turns to us, looking forward to the day of reunion. And I believe that even when we return to the mainland, the children will always remember the poems praising the Fatherland, imbued with love for the four seasons in Truong Sa. We are so lucky to have the teacher here."

Teacher Hanh always keeps in mind “First learn manners, then learn knowledge”. “In addition to knowledge, teacher Cao Van Truyen and I always focus on teaching our children about love for their homeland and country, the will to overcome difficulties, rise up, and the heart to serve the community and the Fatherland.

I hope that the children are not only good at Math and Vietnamese but also proficient in foreign languages ​​and music. Together with Dr. Nong Huu Tho (Truong Sa Island infirmary), we try to supplement the children's English vocabulary on weekends. In fact, there are many smart children on the island. Outstanding is Truong Nguyen Trieu Vy, a 3rd grade student but can learn the 4th grade program", Mr. Hanh shared.

Happiness at the end of life

After 5 years on the island and 2 more years teaching on the mainland, Mr. Hanh will retire. “The time in Truong Sa will forever be the most beautiful memory of my life, the days when I lived fully with my passion, and witnessed the young buds of the country growing up on the sacred land of the Fatherland,” Mr. Hanh confided.

“So what is your biggest wish right now?”, I asked.

After a long while of sadness, I could clearly hear the sound of Truong Sa waves on the other end of the line. “I have three biggest wishes right now. First, I hope that in the new school year, each child will have an additional uniform. Second, I wish there was a way to have a more stable power source, better serving the children's studies, so that the storm lamps here will only be used in rare cases.

Third, I hope my son will soon pass the civil service exam, so that his dream of teaching in Truong Sa will soon come true. I believe that this land will contribute to fostering in him the desire to build the country. As someone who has devoted 35 years of his life toeducation , including 16 years in the highlands and islands, I understand that sacred sentiment even more.

The opening ceremony on a remote island, where the sea is stormy, is a symphony of love, will and aspiration. Teachers like Mr. Le Xuan Hanh, Mr. Cao Van Truyen, and children on the islands are the most beautiful flowers, adding more color to the sacred sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
