The Management Board of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park ( Quang Binh ) recently announced the results of a survey conducted by this unit in collaboration with the Vietnamese - British expedition team.

The survey lasted from March 1 to 15, the expedition team of 12 experts conducted surveys and searches in the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park area and neighboring areas of Minh Hoa and Tuyen Hoa districts. In addition to surveying 3 additional caves, the expedition team discovered 22 new caves.

In which, the core area of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park has 7 surveyed caves with a length of 1,415m; the buffer zone of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park has 7 surveyed caves with a length of 1,027m; the neighboring area of Lam Hoa commune, Tuyen Hoa district has 11 surveyed caves with a length of 1,108m.

The newly surveyed and discovered caves in this period range in length from 30-572m, the height of the cave entrance ranges from 46-550m, and the depth is from 32-154m. Among them are Va Cave (516m), 12/2 Dry Cave (404m), Vuc Hung Cave (430m), Ong Dau Cave (572m), and Vuc Hung Cave (430m). The remaining caves range in length from 30-236m.

According to Mr. Pham Hong Thai, Director of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, the newly discovered caves are within the scope of research to access, determine location, and provide preliminary description. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct in-depth surveys and research to clarify their value, thereby making accurate judgments in the conservation and sustainable exploitation of this landscape and cave.

"In the near future, the unit will survey and exploit which cave areas can welcome tourists . The most important thing is to preserve and keep intact these new caves," said Mr. Thai.

The recognition of 22 more majestic caves has scientific significance, further clarifying the outstanding values of geology, geomorphology and hydrology in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, and also brings scientific value of geomorphology, geology and great potential to develop new tourism products in Phong Nha - Ke Bang in particular and Quang Binh province in general.

Previously in 2023, the British Royal Cave Association conducted a survey and discovered 22 new caves in Quang Binh with a total length of 11.7km. Of which, 20 caves are in Tuyen Hoa and Minh Hoa districts. In addition, there are 2 caves in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.

The caves discovered on this occasion were mostly wet and small, but had some differences compared to many caves found in Quang Binh. One cave was about 278m deep with a waterfall flowing down, however, the expedition did not have enough rope to get to the bottom.

Also in mid-2023, a new cave was discovered in Diu Do village, Truong Son commune, Quang Ninh district (). The cave is more than 1.5km long, the highest point of the cave is about 30m, the cave has many beautiful stalactites and is named Son Nu cave.

Quang Binh is one of the places with the most beautiful natural landscapes in Vietnam. The characteristic that domestic and foreign tourists know about this land is the rich and majestic cave system.

Possessing seamless limestone mountains with few faults, Quang Binh is known as the "Kingdom of Caves" with more than 500 discovered caves, concentrated in Bo Trach and Tuyen Hoa districts. About 40 caves have been put into tourism exploitation, including Son Doong, En and Pygmy, which are the first, second and fourth largest caves in the world, respectively.
