Urgently strengthen the National Council for Sustainable Development

At the meeting, leaders of ministries and branches reviewed the results of the activities of the Council for Sustainable Development and National Competitiveness Improvement in recent times as well as the shortcomings and limitations in organizing consultation and advice for the Government and Prime Minister on issues related to sustainable development and competitiveness improvement.

Opinions agreed that in the coming time, the Council's activities should focus on the pillars of sustainable development: Economy - Society - Environment as committed by Vietnam in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations; identify a number of key tasks in each year, each period, associated with the tasks and state management areas of each ministry and sector.

Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung said that the Council's task is to update new contents and issues such as digital transformation, green transformation, social transformation, etc.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc proposed reviewing the Council's current professional committees as well as reviewing all tasks in general. From there, solutions can be found to create overall cohesion in the Council's activities, while at the same time focusing resources to complete major and urgent goals in sustainable development, suitable to Vietnam's conditions.

Concluding the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha requested the Standing Committee of the Council and specialized committees to hold meetings and report on the results of activities in the past time, especially proposals and advice to the Prime Minister on mechanisms and policies for sustainable development in assigned fields.

"The Council needs to organize a national conference to assess the implementation of sustainable development commitments, clarify existing problems, responsibilities and solutions. From there, identify a number of key operational directions in the field of sustainable development such as digital transformation, green transformation...", the Deputy Prime Minister suggested and requested the Committees under the Council, ministries, branches and localities to urgently develop a plan to assess the situation, the dissemination and implementation of the Party, National Assembly and Government's policies on sustainable development.

The Deputy Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Planning and Investment to coordinate with the Government Office to report to the Prime Minister on the Council's performance from 2018 to present; propose a plan to improve the Council in accordance with international practices and Vietnam's commitment to sustainable development with three pillars: Economy - Society - Environment.

The Council must have the participation of representatives of ministries, branches, Party agencies, Government, National Assembly, mass organizations that are members of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, local representatives, businesses... in each specific field so that the whole society can have a voice and contribute to this big issue.

The Deputy Prime Minister also emphasized that each Committee and each member of the Council must clearly define their responsibilities and specific tasks./.
