The project launch workshop is a forum to connect stakeholders in the coffee value chain to share vision, action directions and establish coordination mechanisms in the next phase. The SAFE project in Vietnam is officially implemented in two key provinces, Son La and Gia Lai .
Speaking at the event, Mr. Pham Ngoc Mau, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), emphasized that the SAFE Project in Vietnam aims to promote the comprehensive transformation of the coffee supply chain towards legality, sustainability and deforestation. Thereby, improving the competitiveness of Vietnamese coffee in the European Union (EU) market.
Currently, in order to address deforestation and forest degradation caused by the production supply chain, the EU has issued the Deforestation Prevention Regulation (EUDR), 3 export industry Key products affected by the EUDR include rubber, coffee and timber.
The project will support businesses and farmers to adapt quickly, maintain stable production and expand market share in the European market, promote sustainable production, enhance capacity to adapt to climate change and protect natural resources. Thereby promoting sustainable agricultural transformation.
Coffee is one of Vietnam's key export products, setting a record in turnover, with 5.6 billion USD in 2024, of which the EU is one of Vietnam's largest coffee consuming markets.
According to Mr. Pham Ngoc Mau, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is committed to accompanying localities, businesses, and organizations to overcome EUDR challenges and achieve the goal of deforestation-free development in the era of greening global trade.
According to Ms. Kristina Buende, Head of Cooperation of the European Union Delegation to Vietnam, the SAFE project in Vietnam aims to support farmers in transitioning towards sustainable production, contributing to demonstrating responsibility towards climate, biodiversity, as well as protecting the rights and livelihoods of forest-dependent communities.
At the same time, the project focuses on gender mainstreaming and supporting vulnerable groups in complying with EUDR requirements, to ensure a just transition, promote equal participation and sustainable livelihoods in the coffee supply chain in Vietnam.
The SAFE project in Vietnam is expected to provide technical training to 8,000 coffee farmers on sustainable coffee production, climate change adaptation, forest protection and traceability management. Collaborate with the EUDR Joint Working Group at central and local levels to support the implementation of the EUDR action plan, through dialogue and information sharing forums.
In addition, 3 EUDR compliance guidelines (integrating gender and social factors) were developed and disseminated to stakeholders; 6 public-private partnership models towards EUDR compliance and export market linkages were supported in development and implementation; content related to EUDR compliance was updated in the Training of Trainers (ToT) and Training of Farmers (ToF) documents. Technical staff in the public-private sector were enhanced in capacity building on sustainable coffee production combined with forest protection and EUDR compliance.
