Restoring the Vietnam - China passenger train

Before 2020, the international passenger train route departing from Gia Lam station (Hanoi) passed through Dong Dang and Bang Tuong border gates, connecting with China's railway system to continue to the cities of Nanning, Guangzhou, Beijing... However, from February 5, 2020, this passenger train route had to temporarily stop operating to ensure prevention of the COVID-19 epidemic, only maintaining international freight trains. After the epidemic, VNR proposed that the Chinese side restore the international railway route to serve the travel and trade needs of people and businesses of the two countries.

Recently, VNR leaders and the Dong Dang - Lang Son Border Gate Economic Zone Management Board negotiated with the Bang Tuong authorities, agreeing on technical conditions and the expected time to restore the intermodal passenger train on May 25.

VNR has reviewed, inspected and supplemented the conditions of infrastructure, human resources, and train routes from Dong Dang station to Gia Lam station, ready to organize international passenger trains. The Hanoi - Dong Dang railway is 162 km long, the only route in the country with a track gauge of 1,000 mm and 1,435 mm, and can connect with the Chinese railway with a track gauge of 1,435 mm. Passengers taking the intermodal train do not have to change trains when crossing the border.
