Efforts to rebuild the fields

Nam Gianh Commune and Ba Don Ward are two localities that suffered heavy losses in vegetable production. Many areas of mustard greens, green onions and lettuce were flooded and completely damaged.

In Nam Gianh commune, immediately after the storm, local authorities and mass organizations mobilized forces to clear mud and dig drainage ditches. Taking advantage of the sunny weather, people quickly went to the fields to prepare the land and replant crops in time for the season, especially the vegetable crop to serve the Tet market.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, Thanh Tan village, Nam Gianh commune, shared: “The floods have destroyed all the plant varieties. Thanks to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection and businesses providing timely seed support, everyone is excited. With new varieties, we will try to overcome the situation to grow this vegetable crop again.”

According to the Head of the Economic Department of Nam Gianh Commune, Le Minh Phuong, the whole commune has 243 hectares of various vegetables, mainly concentrated in the Quang Loc and Quang Hoa areas, serving the needs of people in the area and neighboring communes. “At the beginning of the winter crop this year, people planted seeds early to serve the Tet market in time, but heavy rains and storm No. 10 recently caused heavy damage to many areas. Thanks to the attention of the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection and Hai Mui Ten Do Company Limited, the commune was supported with 1,500 packages of high-quality vegetable seeds at the most difficult time. This is a noble gesture, helping people have conditions to restore production,” Ms. Phuong shared.

In Ba Don ward, the production restoration movement is also being urgently deployed. The whole ward has 145 hectares of winter vegetables, mainly concentrated in Truong Son residential group, where people have been attached to the traditional vegetable growing profession for many years. These days, farmers have started to plant mustard greens, amaranth, Malabar spinach... to serve the year-end market.

Companion seeds

According to the provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, the varieties selected for support are all short-term vegetables, suitable for post-storm weather conditions, easy to consume and highly economically efficient. The total value of support is nearly 30 million VND, enough to plant more than 150 hectares of winter vegetables in Nam Gianh commune and Ba Don ward. Along with providing seeds, engineers of the department and Hai Mui Ten Do Co., Ltd. also directly guide people on the process of planting, caring for and preventing pests and diseases, ensuring good plant growth.

Engineer Ngo Xuan Tri, an officer of Hai Mui Ten Do Company Limited, said: “We support people in areas heavily affected by natural disasters, helping farmers and the agricultural sector to quickly restore production. The company donates vegetable seeds suitable for production areas and intensive farming conditions of the people. At the same time, we coordinate with the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, the agricultural service center and the local economic department to advise and guide people to use seeds with the right techniques and achieve high efficiency.”

Head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection Bui Phuoc Trang shared: “The Department of Agriculture has proactively connected with businesses to accompany and support farmers to compensate for some of the damage. Hai Mui Ten Do Company Limited is an active unit, providing timely support to help people restore production.”

Thanks to this cooperation, up to now, more than 60% of the damaged vegetable area in the two localities has been replanted. Mr. Hoang Nam Doan, Head of the Safe Vegetable Growing Association, Truong Son residential group, Ba Don ward said: "People here mainly live by growing vegetables. After the storm, most of the area was damaged, but thanks to seed support and technical guidance, we were able to replant soon. The valuable thing is that people receive attention and encouragement from all levels to have more confidence in staying on the land and keeping the profession."

Giving away seeds not only has material value, but is also a great source of spiritual encouragement. In the fields of Nam Gianh and Ba Don, green is returning. The laughter mixed with the sound of farmers hoeing the soil signals the start of a new vegetable season, affirming the strong vitality of the homeland's fields after the natural disaster.
