Previously, at about 4:22 p.m. on October 31, a large explosion suddenly occurred in a rice field near a resident's house in Le Xuyen village, causing mud and dirt to scatter and smoke to billow. After the explosion, a hole about 4 meters in diameter and 1 meter deep appeared. Immediately after receiving the report from the people, the Commune Military Command and Nam Cua Viet Commune Police sent forces to the scene to grasp the situation and reassure the people.
Through inspection of the scene, the authorities determined that the explosion was caused by an unexploded artillery shell left over from the war deep underground. Although the explosion did not cause any damage to people or property, it made people extremely worried because the surrounding area still had many unexploded artillery shells.
Mr. Tran Viet Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Cua Viet Commune, said that people living in the area where the explosion occurred hope that all levels and sectors will soon inspect and clear bombs and mines to ensure safety for people living and working.
