According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Thanh Hoa district, up to now, the salinity level in rivers, canals and inland ditches in the district is still low. Therefore, the agricultural production situation is basically guaranteed, with no recorded impacts due to drought and saltwater intrusion.
However, about 6,359 hectares of crops are at risk of being affected if salinity increases and penetrates deep into the fields. Of these, the largest area is mai trees with 819 hectares, followed by taro with about 767 hectares, lemon with about 645 hectares, rice with about 397 hectares, and the rest are other crops.
The working delegation worked with the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Thanh Hoa district on drought and saltwater intrusion prevention and control.
Regarding domestic water, it basically meets the needs of the people during the dry season. However, currently, the domestic water supply system in the district is mainly small-scale water supply projects that have been invested for many years, leading to many degraded water pipe systems causing water loss during the transmission process to the people, thereby affecting the water supply to households.
Checking salinity of canals in Thanh Hoa district
To ensure agricultural production in the context of complicated natural disasters, especially drought and saltwater intrusion, the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa district proposed to speed up the construction progress of the remaining saltwater prevention sluices, including Ben Ke, Rach Chua, Bun Ba Cua 1 and 2 sluices, Kenh 1, Kenh 2 and Kenh Cai Tom sluices (Thanh Hoa - Tan Thanh border). These projects will help complete the local saltwater prevention sluice system.
At the same time, the district proposed to soon implement the dredging and dike renovation projects, upgrade the centralized water supply system for Hamlet 3, Tan Hiep Commune to serve the daily life of about 1,000 households. In addition, the district proposed to add to the plan to deploy the salinity prevention sluice system along the Vam Co Tay River and the northern bank of Duong Van Duong Canal as well as invest in the water supply system for Ong Hieu Hamlet, Ong Quoi Hamlet, Thanh Phu Commune, to serve the daily life of about 1,000 households.
Water resources on canals and ditches in Thanh Hoa district basically ensure production.
After the field inspection, the Working Group requested the locality to continue to closely monitor the drought and saltwater intrusion situation, regularly measure and check water quality; promptly notify people about the water situation in order to proactively take effective response measures, protect the health and welfare of the community./.
