The book Hanoi Architecture brings the thousand-year quintessence of Thang Long - Hanoi architecture, especially during the French colonial period, helping readers have a comprehensive view of Vietnam in general and the capital in particular.
The book, printed by The Gioi Publishing House and published by Phanbook, by author Tran Quoc Bao, is designed in hardcover, 364 pages thick, bilingual in Vietnamese - French, translated by Tham Yen Linh.
This is the result of the hard work of a multi-generational team over 2 years. In addition to Dr. Architect Tran Quoc Bao (lecturer at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering) who compiled the content, there is also a young team who designed, illustrated, and took photos of the architectural works to create an impressive book.
The book consists of 3 parts. With part 1 on the ancient architecture of Thang Long - Hanoi, readers will learn about the triple-layered architecture of the ancient Thang Long citadel to the ancient architectural works that remain today such as the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam, Hanoi Flag Tower, Thang Long Imperial Citadel...
In part 2 - the main chapter of the book on Hanoi's architecture during the French colonial period, readers will visit and learn about the architectural gems of the French colonial period divided into typical styles such as Beaux-Arts, Art Deco, Indochina, early French architecture, steel architecture, and Gothic.
Part 3 is Hanoi architecture after 1954, also bringing many interesting discoveries about beautiful architectural works that have not received much attention such as apartment buildings, other socialist architectural works to recent modern architectural works...
Reading this book, readers will feel like watching a movie about Hanoi's history. In addition, the author also introduces typical architectural works through the periods such as the Presidential Palace, Hanoi Opera House, Government Guest House, Supreme People's Court Headquarters, Hoa Lo Prison...
According to journalist Tran Huu Phuc Tien, the biggest goal of the work is to spread love for Hanoi, raise people's awareness in preserving the capital's cultural and architectural heritage, especially the young generation.
In addition, the speakers also commented that French architectural works in Hanoi are a manifestation of the current urban heritage theme, marking the acceptance of the modernization process of Hanoi in particular and Vietnam in general.
The reception and use of buildings and structures that originally represented colonial rule changed so that they became part of the city's identity, or more broadly, the nation's identity.
