November 20th Anniversary: ​​49th Anniversary of Ho Chi Minh City College of Electricity

Ho Chi Minh City College of Electricity has trained many generations of quality students, serving the development and growth of the Electricity industry in the South and the whole country.

On the morning of November 20, 2025, teachers and students of Ho Chi Minh City College of Electricity (under the Southern Power Corporation - EVNSPC) celebrated the 49th anniversary of the school's founding (1976-2025) and welcomed Vietnamese Teachers' Day November 20. The ceremony took place solemnly and left many beautiful memories for generations of students, staff and teaching staff of the school.

Ho Chi Minh City College of Electricity (abbreviated as HEPC) has a 49-year tradition, closely associated with the construction and development process of the Southern Electricity industry from its early days to the present.

On October 20, 1976, the school was established under the name of Electrical Engineering Workers School, a branch of Gia Dinh Technical School according to Decision No. 101/TTg and 05/VPQD of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Universities and Vocational Secondary Schools. Overcoming many difficulties, lack of material, human resources and initial teaching and learning equipment, the school's multi-generational teaching staff has trained the first generations of excellent students and is a human resource contributing to the reform and development of the country after the reunification.

In 1996, the school transformed into a human resource training center specializing in the Electricity industry in the Southern region with a total investment of 64 billion VND. This is a favorable condition for the school to be equipped with facilities for training and learning, in which typical are the power system simulator and the power grid practice ground of more than 5,000 square meters.

In 1997, the Electrical Engineering Workers School was upgraded and renamed to Electrical High School 2, under the Electricity Company 2 (now Southern Power Corporation) according to Decision No. 818/QD-TCCB of the Minister of Industry at that time.

On April 6, 2000, the Electricity Secondary School 2 was transferred to the Vietnam Electricity Corporation (now Vietnam Electricity Group - EVN). In 2005, the Ho Chi Minh City Electricity College was established on the basis of Electricity Secondary School 2 with two main tasks: First, training and fostering cadres in the fields of electricity, electricity-electronics, grid management and repair, transformer station operation, line and station construction and installation, electrical equipment operation, etc. Second, scientific research to serve the requirements of socio- economic development.

Despite many difficulties and challenges since its establishment, generations of cadres, teachers and staff of the school have always strived and made efforts in teaching and training and have achieved many outstanding results. Specifically, from 1986 to 1996, the human resources trained by the school have actively contributed to and effectively served key national projects such as the construction and operation of Tri An Hydropower Plant, the 500kV North-South transmission line (circuit 1), the rural electrification program, etc.

In the period 1995-2000, the school kept up with the economic development at that time when training a team of operators and line managers to operate the increasing number of transformer stations and 110kV, 220kV lines being built. In particular, in 2003, the school trained electrical engineers from Cambodia to operate the Moc Bai - Phnom Penh 220kV station and line. In addition, key power projects in the South such as Phu My Thermal Power Center, Vinh Tan Thermal Power Center, Duyen Hai... all had the participation of students from Ho Chi Minh City College of Electricity.

With these achievements, over the years the school has received attention from the Party, State, Government and Ministries, and has been awarded many Medals and Certificates of Merit of various types.

Currently, Ho Chi Minh City College of Electricity always focuses on investing resources to keep up with the trend, actively applying scientific and technological achievements in the electricity industry such as transformer station automation, smart grid, automatic control, etc. In addition, the school also organizes many specialized training classes that closely follow the production and business requirements of EVNSPC such as: transformer station automation, on-duty, management of power metering systems, medium voltage underground cable connection, training in hot power repair of distribution grids, cleaning of distribution grids, installation of rooftop solar power, testing of CBM technology equipment diagnosis, repair of energized 110kV grids, connection of 110kV underground cables, smart grids, smart transformer stations, etc.

In the coming time, Ho Chi Minh City College of Electricity will focus on comprehensive digital transformation in teaching, learning and management; expand training in new majors such as Nuclear Power Plant Operation, Smart Grid, Industrial Automation 4.0; continue to standardize the teaching staff according to national and international standards; promote cooperation with businesses to increase internship and job opportunities; build a safe, creative and entrepreneurial learning environment for students...
