Memories of the days of journalism at ATK Thai Nguyen

ATK Thai Nguyen in the period of 1947-1954, with the role of "Capital of Resistance", gathered the central agencies of the Party and State, and was also the cradle of revolutionary journalism. During this period, many major press agencies were established, such as: Red Hammer and Sickle, Vietnam Independence, National Salvation, Liberation Flag, Labor, People, People's Army, Vietnam News Agency, Vietnam Television... The press agencies all aimed for a common goal of fighting for national liberation. Many generations of journalists did not hesitate to endure hardships and sacrifices, contributing to the historic victory of Dien Bien Phu that resounded throughout the five continents and shook the world.

With the ideal and goal of all for the success of the revolution, the press is not only a sharp fighting pen to fight against the enemy, but also has the task of propagating the cause of building socialism. During the years of resistance against the French in the Viet Bac resistance zone, despite facing countless hardships, journalists really lit up the fire of enthusiasm, always working selflessly. The professional baggage of reporters at that time was not only a pen and a notebook, but they also played the role of national defense soldiers going to the battlefield with bags of rice, guns...

Due to the special circumstances of the country, press activities took place strongly in the revolutionary war zones, associated with many press agencies setting up operations. ATK Thai Nguyen was also the place where newspapers of mass organizations such as: Labor, Youth, Women... were established.

Through countless dangers and hardships, war reporters helped the Vietnamese revolutionary press mature and grow remarkably, even in the harshest circumstances of the war to defend the country.

According to Colonel Nguyen Khac Tiep (one of the first reporters of Vietnam News Agency and Voice of Vietnam , former Deputy Head of International News Department, People's Army Newspaper), in 1946, he accompanied journalist Tran Kim Xuyen, the first leader of Vietnam News Agency, to report on many campaigns. The resistance war against France was arduous and lacking in many ways, but propaganda work was always considered an important front. We made the newspaper carefully and meticulously, without any mistakes. Each issue sent to soldiers on the front line showed the dedication of those working in the battlefield.

During this period, a number of major press agencies published their first issues in the mountains and forests of Thai Nguyen. The People's Army Newspaper - the agency of the Central Military Commission, the Ministry of National Defense , the voice of the armed forces and the people of Vietnam was born, named by President Ho Chi Minh himself... The People's Army Newspaper's editorial office was on a hill in Khau Dieu village (Dinh Bien commune, Dinh Hoa district) donated by the people, convenient for journalism, travel and logistics. Along with donating land, the people also contributed a lot of effort and materials such as wood, bamboo, palm... to build shelters to live and work. With the valuable help of the ATK people and the efforts of cadres, reporters and staff, after nearly 3 months of preparation, on October 20, 1950, the People's Army Newspaper published its first issue in the middle of the "Windy Capital"...

Nhan Dan Newspaper - the Central Party's mouthpiece, launched its first issue on March 11, 1951. According to the memoirs of journalist Thep Moi, Nhan Dan Newspaper No. 1 and the first issues of 1951 were published in Khuon Nha, Quy Ky Commune (Dinh Hoa). The newspaper's printing house was located in Dong Ao Hamlet, Yen Lang Commune (Dai Tu) right at the foot of Deo Khe Pass. Party journalists at that time stayed up all night with the printing house workers to fold each issue by hand, carry it to the editorial office, and tie it into bundles using old newspapers and forest vines. Then from the mountains and forests of Viet Bac, the transportation network overcame all the enemy's sieges and blockades, bringing the Party's voice to the people.

Many veteran journalists recounted: “Every morning, we saw tiger footprints on the road from the printing house to the editorial office.” At that time, reporters had no salary, only rice, while contributors did not receive royalties, only letters of thanks and encouragement.

Also during the resistance war against French colonialism, in the difficult and fierce period, the team of revolutionary journalists was given attention for training and fostering to serve the purpose of propaganda for the resistance. On April 4, 1949, President Ho Chi Minh founded and personally named the first journalism school of the Vietnamese revolution named Huynh Thuc Khang in Tan Thai commune (Dai Tu), with 43 students. In a letter dated June 9, 1949, President Ho Chi Minh advised: "... This class is the first journalism class, I hope you guys and girls will compete to study and practice to be worthy of being pioneers on the journalism front. The press must also implement the slogan "All for victory!".

Journalist Ly Thi Trung, former Editor-in-Chief of the Vietnam Women's Newspaper, one of the three rare female students of the first and only class of this school, recounted: The three-month course helped students acquire a massive program including theory, expertise and practice of all types of journalism. In addition to classroom hours, students also listened to extracurricular talks outside the classroom to create a more open and fun atmosphere. During the practical part, students were organized to go to tea-producing areas to learn about the local people's traditional tea-making methods. After that, the harvested works were submitted, selected and published in the class newspaper called "New Pen".

Journalist Ly Thi Trung also shared that before attending the class, many journalists often wrote according to what they heard. After being taught by comrade Truong Chinh, they learned about the fighting spirit and objectivity of journalism, and realized that writing journalism is very elaborate.

The image of enthusiastic young reporters carrying rice in one hand and typewriter in the Viet Bac resistance base is always imprinted in the memories of journalists. From the land of ATK Thai Nguyen, the team of journalists was trained, nurtured, had important steps of maturity and spread to the battlefields, contributing and becoming the "big trees" of the Vietnamese revolutionary press. Since then, the Vietnamese revolutionary press has had a strong development in both quantity and quality, well meeting the requirements of the tasks in the process of innovation and integration.
