Expectations for Chinese chess to flourish

Người Lao ĐộngNgười Lao Động18/08/2023

Never before has any sports federation or association left such a bad reputation in its first term of operation as Chinese chess. When even the regular executive position of VCF, the general secretary, rotated through 4 people in just one term, both related and unrelated to previous Chinese chess activities, the work was therefore more chaotic than anywhere else.

The summary of the first term (2018-2023) of VCF has revealed many outstanding problems related to the role and responsibility of VCF itself. For example, the organization of the "2018 Vietnam Open Asian Youth Chess Championship" was not approved by the authorities at all levels, nor was it approved by the Asian Chess Federation, the name of the tournament was exaggerated in scale, while only a few Asian countries and territories sent athletes to participate.

When the 2019 Southeast Asian Age Group Chess Championship hosted by Binh Duong was approved by the Asian Chess Federation, VCF showed an uncooperative and unsupportive attitude by delaying the issuance of regulations, leading to the host locality having to reluctantly withdraw from the tournament.

Domestic tournaments are being buzzed with the public about the buying and selling of points and asking for rankings. The criteria for selecting athletes for the national team also has many shortcomings as stated by VCF, national rankings are not the criteria for athletes to be called to the team, or the list of teams is announced before the national championship starts, which has discouraged the athletes' efforts.

The most noisy process is the selection process for the team to participate in the 2022 World Championship and the 31st and 32nd SEA Games, which has made fans frustrated. The two male and female champions and many players with very high rankings at the 2022 and 2023 National Championships were not summoned and this incident almost "sunk" if the press had not spoken up. The climax of the VCF's bad reputation was when the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism directed the General Department of Sports and Physical Training (formerly) to remove the head of the chess delegation participating in the 32nd SEA Games and at the same time requested a review of the entire team list. It can be said that this is a drastic intervention by the governing unit, something that has never happened in the history of the country's sports.

The public is waiting and expecting that the second term of VCF will soon have solutions to remove the barriers that have limited the development of Vietnamese chess in the recent past. Many tasks are waiting for VCF to implement such as a plan to systematically and systematically train future generations of chess players, standardize the competition system from central to local levels, promote grassroots tournaments to attract a large number of chess players; mobilize all resources to invest in Vietnamese chess to improve international achievements...
