Expectations for Hue to become a model green city

With many advantages that "nowhere else has", Hue City is becoming one of the leading localities in green transformation, green and sustainable industrial development in Vietnam.

On the afternoon of September 19 in Hue City, Tuoi Tre Newspaper and Hue City People's Committee organized a workshop on "Green transformation and breakthrough in attracting industrial investment in Hue City".

Hue is determined to move towards green transformation.

Mr. Phan Quy Phuong - Vice Chairman of Hue City People's Committee - emphasized that Hue is not only known as a heritage and tourist city, but is also facing a "golden opportunity" to break through and shape a new industrial model: green industry, smart industry. This is considered an inevitable path to both develop the economy and preserve the unique cultural and environmental values ​​of the ancient capital.

To achieve the green transformation goal, Hue has issued many policies to support businesses in technological innovation, energy saving, and development of circular waste treatment infrastructure, and established four working groups directly managed by the city People's Committee leaders to remove difficulties for key projects.

The city identified four key groups of solutions: planning and developing ecological industrial parks; perfecting preferential policies on land, tax, and credit; investing in synchronous infrastructure; and training high-quality human resources.

"We believe that with the long-term vision and strong determination of the local government, Hue will become an attractive destination for domestic and foreign investors, especially investors who share the same vision of sustainable development," said Mr. Phuong.

Sharing at the workshop, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Dinh Thien - former director of the Vietnam Economic Institute - said that sustainable development is a trend and a vital factor for not only any country or locality.

"Green transformation must be considered as a national challenge to apply the appropriate approach principle. Hue is also approaching in this direction. We must resonate with global strength; the State and businesses must co-create development.

"We must empower and create conditions for localities that want to get ahead and localities that follow. Encourage winners and reward them appropriately in green development," Mr. Thien recommended.

Mr. Nguyen Tuan Quang - Deputy Director of the Department of Climate Change ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) - said that the green transformation trend is having many advantages as the greening trend is taking place strongly around the world.

In the country, the green transformation policy is being strongly promoted, many related resolutions have been issued. The government is very interested in this issue. On the other hand, businesses are making strong efforts to transform green, large businesses inspire small businesses. A very important factor is the trend of national integration.

However, Mr. Quang said that there are still some challenges such as poor environmental awareness; production technology is generally backward. Green transformation requires large resources while the scale of Vietnamese enterprises is still weak. In terms of state management, there is currently no incentive policy, creating a difference between green transformation and units that do not accept transformation.

For the green transformation to take place smoothly and sustainably, Mr. Quang believes that each enterprise needs to develop its own strategy early, green transformation cannot be done immediately but requires a process. After having a strategy, Mr. Quang believes that it is necessary to calculate resources and ways to pursue it. Third, enterprises need to take advantage of international cooperation opportunities to access resources from foreign investment.

Finding breakthroughs to attract green industrial investment

Mr. Pham Van Quan - Deputy Director of the Department of Industry of the Ministry of Industry and Trade - gave specific suggestions for Hue City to attract investment. According to Mr. Quan, although there is a lot of potential, industrial development has not been as expected. Currently, the trend of trade war is creating opportunities for Vietnam, including Hue.

Regarding infrastructure, Mr. Quan said that this is still a weak point of Hue, there needs to be a highway connecting deeper inside to attract more investors. Regarding green transformation, Mr. Quan said that green transformation requires large resources, but it is necessary to attract more large enterprises to gradually purify them and not be too "picky"...

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Van Phuong, Chairman of Hue City People's Committee, said that the workshop on green transformation and breakthrough in attracting industrial investment in Hue City is a very important program and has special significance for the city.

According to Mr. Phuong, Hue is known for its peaceful and slow life with many cultural heritages and beautiful landscapes. However, in terms of economic development, Hue is still quite slow compared to many other localities.

"In the new era, we are confident and steadfast in our orientation towards green industrial development and sustainable development. We are very grateful to the experts and businesses who have contributed their comments, and especially Tuoi Tre newspaper for organizing such a meaningful workshop," said Mr. Phuong.

Also within the framework of the workshop "Green transformation and breakthrough in attracting industrial investment in Hue City" on the afternoon of September 19, the People's Committee of Hue City signed a strategic cooperation memorandum between the city government and Phuong Trang Group Investment Joint Stock Company and Kim Long Motor Hue Joint Stock Company. In addition, the Management Board of Hue City Economic and Industrial Zones also awarded investment certificates to enterprises investing in the city within the framework of the workshop.

Contribute to making Hue a "green destination"

The workshop is within the framework of the Green Vietnam 2025 project, initiated by Tuoi Tre newspaper and the Vietnam Packaging Recycling Alliance, in coordination with the Hue City People's Committee and accompanying units.

Mr. Tran Xuan Toan, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre Newspaper, said that the conference received active support from leaders and departments in Hue City. The organizing committee carefully considered many factors to decide on the topic for the conference.

"Hue is one of the places where relics are well preserved and highly appreciated by the media and tourists. When aiming for common development, Tuoi Tre wants to contribute a quality program to Hue City.

The workshop was organized with three objectives: Clarifying green transformation in the economy; discussing evaluation criteria and accompanying policies to promote green transformation; and promoting Hue as a green destination through the workshop," Mr. Toan emphasized.
