General Director of Quang Tri Trading Corporation Le Quang Nhat said that, realizing the effectiveness of green hemp, at the end of 2024, the company coordinated with An Phuoc - Viramie Group to conduct a trial planting of green hemp in the communes: Cam Hieu, Cam Chinh, Cam Thanh (Cam Lo district); Linh Truong (Gio Linh district) and Trieu Nguyen (Dakrong district) on an area of nearly 4.5 hectares with 26 participating households. Using the AP1 green hemp variety researched and selected by An Phuoc - Viramie Group in collaboration with the Institute of Agricultural Genetics under the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the planting density is from 23,000 - 25,000 trees/ha.

Participating in the model, Quang Tri Trading Corporation Joint Stock Company cooperated with localities to survey and select suitable soil and planting areas and organized field trips and technical training for farmers implementing the model. At the same time, it supported all input materials such as fertilizers, seedlings, etc. The company's technical team provided direct guidance right in the field from the process of preparing soil, fertilizing, planting, caring, preventing pests, weeds, and harvesting. The company signed a contract to commit to purchasing all the green hemp bark harvested for farmers.

According to Mr. Nhat, although the weather conditions at the time of planting were unfavorable, with prolonged cold and rain, and the seedlings had to be preserved in the field for quite a long time, thanks to the efforts of the farmers and the support of the technical team, the green hemp gardens still grew well, with a germination rate of 90% - 98%. "Currently, the model has begun to harvest the first crop. To facilitate farmers, the company has coordinated with An Phuoc - Viramie Group to bring fiber stripping machines to each model to harvest the hemp husks," said Mr. Nhat.

As one of the households participating in the model, Mr. Nguyen Duc Quynh in Dinh Xa village, Cam Hieu commune, Cam Lo district said that his family has nearly 3.5 sao of land along the Hieu river, previously only cultivating the winter-spring crop with crops such as peanuts and corn, and leaving the summer-autumn crop fallow. When he learned about the green hemp planting model, he boldly registered to participate.

According to Mr. Quynh, through initial assessment, it can be affirmed that green hemp is an easy-to-grow plant, not picky about soil and climate. Because it is a root crop, planted for one year and harvested for 7-10 years, growing green hemp is only difficult in the first crop, from the second crop onwards, only care, fertilization and weeding are required. A year can yield 3-4 harvests. After harvesting, the green hemp stems are put into a machine to strip the bark, then dried and the company buys all of them at a price of 40,000 VND/kg of dry bark.

“Currently, the family is harvesting the first crop and fertilizing and caring for the green hemp to grow to the second crop. According to calculations, only needing to harvest 3 crops/year will bring a profit of over 60 million VND. Compared to previous traditional crops such as peanuts and corn, the economic efficiency is much higher. In particular, the products are purchased entirely by businesses, so farmers can rest assured in production,” said Mr. Quynh.

According to Mr. Do Tran Tien, a technical officer of An Phuoc - Viramie Group, the AP1 green hemp variety is evaluated to have many superior characteristics, with quality equivalent to or higher than existing hemp varieties in the world.

The tree is 2.5 - 3 m tall, has a high coverage rate, and branches quickly. The AP1 green hemp tree trunk is thicker, the bark is thicker, the leaves are larger than traditional hemp trees, giving high quality finished hemp fiber. The yield is 1 - 1.5 tons/ha. Each year, there are 3 - 5 harvests. When harvesting, just close to the base, the hemp sprouts will continue to grow again. After harvesting, the green hemp tree is peeled, dried and used as raw material to produce fiber to weave high-quality fabrics.

In addition, the core and leaves of the hemp can be used as animal feed and organic fertilizer. However, Mr. Tien also noted that for the green hemp plant to grow well and bring high efficiency, farmers need to plant at the right density, ensure enough moisture for the plant; care, weed, and fertilize according to technical procedures, especially in the first crop.

According to General Director of Quang Tri Trading Corporation Le Quang Nhat, after 5 months of planting and caring for green hemp, it has initially shown its adaptability and suitability to soil conditions in many areas in the province such as sandy soil, alluvial soil along rivers and streams, hilly soil... Potential to expand large areas with low investment costs.

The output products are very diverse from hemp bark, hemp leaves, hemp tubers, hemp cores... bringing economic efficiency to green hemp growers. Farmers can completely carry out all the steps from planting, caring for to harvesting green hemp after being trained. It is expected that with 3 harvests/year, after deducting costs, the net profit will be from 60 - 80 million VND/ha/year.

Sharing about the upcoming orientation, Mr. Nhat said that the company will continue to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the model in the next batches in order to have a basis for replication and development into a raw material area with an area of about 3,000 hectares. The company also committed to accompanying and supporting farmers with seedlings, fertilizers, and technical guidance to expand the green hemp growing model. At the same time, it will coordinate with An Phuoc - Viramie Group to build a local processing factory when the area is stable.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hong Phuong has high expectations for green hemp in converting rice fields lacking water and abandoned in the summer-autumn crop to green hemp; replacing a part of the cassava area with low productivity and quality due to cassava mosaic disease.

According to Ms. Phuong, with low investment costs, simple care techniques, and hemp bark products that are contracted and purchased on-site by businesses, AP1 green hemp promises to be a new crop that brings high economic efficiency to farmers.

In addition, unlike other crops that have a short growth cycle, harvested annually, and then destroyed, soil erosion will increase. Green hemp can retain its roots for 7-10 years, so it is basically a good anti-erosion plant. The leaves and stems of green hemp contain a lot of nutrients, which are very effective in restoring and improving the soil, in line with the green growth orientation.
