In an era where music has more and more new forms of expression and new genres of music, old values and traditional music are at risk of being lost. Associate Professor, Dr. Le Van Toan - former Director of the Vietnam National Academy of Music, had a conversation with Dan Viet reporter about this issue.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Le Van Toan, why does the issue of aesthetics in music among today's youth need to be given special attention?

- When we look back at the general trends in the needs and musical aesthetics of today's youth, we always see that young people are creative, dynamic, like to explore and especially always desire and crave new and creative musical products to enjoy.

Therefore, the problem for professionals is that music products that want to gain attention when released need to meet this legitimate need of today's young generation. However, it also poses a significant challenge to the role, responsibility and creative and research capacity of professionals that must be further enhanced.

Do you think traditional music forms are at risk of extinction?

- In general, in the new life, many traditional literary and musical heritages have been gradually lost. Many old literary and artistic contexts and environments are no longer met. People today have had many changes in their working environment, production, cultural and artistic activities, etc.

The pace of life, the pace of work and many activities have impacted and affected the psychology of people today, including the youth. It is not true to say that it is fading away, because modern society allows new music genres to enter Vietnam. And as mentioned above, with modern and creative thinking, young music makers still know how to combine and renew Vietnamese folk music. For example, some songs by Hoang Thuy Linh are loved by young people.

So, in your opinion, how can young people cultivate an aesthetic appreciation for folk music or traditional music?

- Personal musical aesthetics are satisfied according to preferences, optional, and at will. The issue that needs to be addressed to young people is to be equipped with awareness of traditional musical aesthetics from childhood to absorb, to know, to love, to gradually be able to create, enjoy, teach and protect the traditional values of Vietnamese national music.

However, we must also take into account the important role of the community, which is the filter, the quintessence, the role of preserving and spreading heritage, the filter of true musical and artistic values.

How do you think the tasks of composing, researching, and criticizing music should be innovated to bring traditional music closer to young audiences?

- We need to have close, closely connected links between social organizations, professions, and specialized fields in the fields of music - theater - cinema, fine arts, even architecture, design, construction, etc. Performing arts products of music associated with cultural industries such as cinema, fine arts, music, dance, and circus will create more openness, novelty, and appeal.

For example, in China, many music and dance art programs directed by director Zhang Yimou have been very successful, earning high economic benefits through the creation of new traditional arts, including traditional music.

Besides, the connections in music creation, music performance, research, music criticism, musiceducation and training (professional and general)... need to be placed in a close relationship, highly connected in the country's music activities.

Can you cite some of the beauty in traditional music so that readers can understand more?

- There are many examples. For example, the beauty in Quan Ho singing culture is the importance of loyalty, affection, humility, love and mutual support. Or Xoan singing associated with the worship of Hung Kings, reflects the noble cultural tradition of behavior of generations of Vietnamese people - respect for ancestors, the culture of drinking water and remembering the source, eating fruit and remembering the person who planted the tree...

Currently, some new music products of young people are causing a lot of prejudice, what do you think about this?

- Faced with the new reality of life, we need to create conditions for the young generation to live with the cultural heritage and national art, including national music. In order for folk music or contemporary professional music to coexist and develop, it is necessary to equip ourselves with enough knowledge to clearly perceive the root and tip factors in composing, performing, and researching music (both traditional music and new music).
