Hai Duong currently owns a dense river network, with 14 large rivers (about 500 km long) and over 2,000 km of small rivers, flowing in the Northwest - Southeast direction.
Major rivers such as Thai Binh River, Kinh Thay River, Kinh Mon River, Luoc River, Lai Vu River, etc., together with the Bac Hung Hai irrigation system, form a rich source of surface water. Hai Duong also has many natural and artificial lakes and ponds, which play a role in water storage, climate regulation and nurturing the local ecosystem. Surface water is an essential resource, playing a central role in the water supply chain for domestic use, agriculture, industry and aquaculture.

However, surface water pollution in many areas in Hai Duong is becoming more complicated, posing a serious risk to public health, water security, ecological security and local economic security.
The cause is determined to be untreated waste discharge from industrial zones, traditional craft villages, and agricultural activities. Environmental protection awareness is still limited in the community and businesses. There is a lack of a system for monitoring, supervising, and managing water quality.
