Times Higher Education (THE) has just announced the 2025 Asian University Rankings.
3 Vietnamese universities appear in the rankings for the first time
This year, three new Vietnamese faces are named in this ranking: Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Hanoi Medical University, Ho Chi Minh City Open University, along with six other Vietnamese representatives ranked last year.
Notably, although it is the first time entering this ranking, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics is in 136th place, taking the No. 1 position in Vietnam from Ton Duc Thang University. This is also the first time our country has a university ranked high according to THE's assessment.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dong Phong, Chairman of the Council of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, said: "With the 136th position in the 2025 Asian University Rankings announced by THE, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics has reached one of the key goals set for the 2025 - 2045 period very early, which is to be in the top 250 universities in Asia by 2030 and the top 150 by 2045."
The next ranking is Ton Duc Thang University (group 201 - 250, continuing to maintain a downward trend since being named in this ranking, from 73rd in 2022, down to 86th in 2023, 193rd in 2024).
Duy Tan University is in group 251-300 this year. This is also the first time the two schools have lost their number 1 and number 2 positions in Vietnam since appearing in this ranking.
Hanoi Medical University, in its first year, entered the 401-500 group. Ho Chi Minh City Open University also made a leap, from being unranked, this year it entered the 501-600 group of THE.
Meanwhile, other universities and colleges: Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University and Hue University with almost unchanged rankings, in groups 501 - 600 and 601+.
Ranking positions of Vietnamese universities in THE's 2025 Asian University Rankings
What criteria does THE use to rank universities?
THE Asia Rankings 2025 evaluated more than 853 universities from 35 countries and territories, based on 18 criteria including:
Research quality (Research quality - 30%): citation impact, research strength, research excellence, research influence.
Research environment (Research environment - 28%): research reputation, research income, research productivity.
Teaching (Teaching - 24.5%): teaching reputation, faculty/student ratio, PhD/bachelor ratio, PhD/faculty ratio, institutional income.
R&D, applied intellectual property (Industry - 10%): income from R&D, applied intellectual property.
International outlook (7.5%): international student ratio, international faculty ratio, international cooperation.
This ranking method is similar to the way THE evaluates universities worldwide, however some criteria have been weighted to reflect the specific factors of Asia.
Among Vietnamese universities, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics ranks first in terms of research quality and environment - the two groups with the largest proportions. Hanoi University of Science and Technology has the largest income from knowledge transfer and the ability to attract funding, while Ton Duc Thang University has the best international prospects. Hanoi Medical University has teaching quality that is superior to the other eight schools.
According to this year's rankings, Japan leads in the number of ranked schools with 199, India is second (107 schools), followed by China (94).
Topping the entire Asian rankings are Tsinghua University and Peking University (China). These two universities maintain their first and second positions in the Asian university rankings for the sixth year.
Next are the schools: National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), University of Tokyo (Japan) and University of Hong Kong, with rankings only fluctuating slightly compared to last year.
