Microplastics found in ovarian cyst fluid for the first time

(PLVN) - This alarming discovery raises concerns about the impact of microplastics on women's reproductive and endocrine health.

The study, published in the journal Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, examined microplastics in ovarian cyst fluid from 18 women being treated at an infertility clinic in Salerno, Italy.

As a result, microplastics were detected in the ovarian cyst fluid of 14 people.

Follicular fluid provides essential nutrients and biological signals for egg development. The authors say the presence of microplastics could impact fertility, hormonal balance, and overall reproductive health.

The findings are a major step forward in understanding how and why microplastics affect women's reproductive health, but also alarming, said Luigi Montano, a researcher at the University of Rome and lead author of the study.

“This finding may serve as an important warning signal about the invasiveness of these emerging contaminants in the female reproductive system,” the study stated.

Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment, from the top of Everest to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Scientists believe food is the main route of human exposure to microplastics, with recent research finding microplastics in all meat and produce tested. Microplastics have been found throughout the human body.

Microplastics are particularly dangerous because they can contain any number of 16,000 plastic chemicals. These include highly toxic compounds such as PFAS, bisphenols, and phthalates that have been linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, hormone disruption, or developmental toxicity.

Microplastics are found throughout the human body and can penetrate the brain and placental barrier.

Current recommendations include: limiting the use of single-use plastics, avoiding reheating food in plastic containers, not serving hot foods in paper cups with plastic linings, and preferring wooden or stainless steel utensils over plastic.
