Akira - the work that set a new standard for anime, Godzilla Minus One - one of the best Godzilla movies and other highly rated series will be introduced through the Japanese Film Festival in Vietnam this year.
"Godzilla -1.0" will first come to Vietnamese audiences after its release in 2023.
The Japanese Film Festival in Vietnam will return to Vietnamese audiences in 4 provinces/cities this November and December. This is a cultural exchange film screening activity (no awards) organized by the Japan Foundation in Vietnam in many provinces and cities.
Among the 11 films introduced are a series of films that have received international attention, most notably "Godzilla Minus One" (Godzilla -1.0, 2023), the first film about the monster Godzilla - "Godzilla" (1954), "Evil does not exist" (Evil does not exist, 2023).
Portraying a devastated Japan at “below zero” after World War II, “Godzilla Minus One” is not simply a film about a monster with terrible destructive power but also the complex inner life of post-war people.
The film won the Critics Choice Awards (US) for Best Foreign Language Film and an Oscar in 2024 for Achievement in Visual Effects. It was also the best domestic work of 2023, winning 8 important awards at the 47th Japan Academy.
Next came the first Godzilla film ever made, which is considered both the birth of an iconic and historically significant Japanese character and the start of a series of world- famous monster films that followed.
The third film is “Evil does not exist”, which won the Jury Prize at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. The film's author - director Ryusuke Hamaguchi - won the Oscar for best foreign film in 2022. Like many other Japanese films on the same theme exploring the complex nature of human beings, “Evil does not exist” stands out with its minimalist, profound but powerful style.
Fans of anime in general and science fiction in particular will be interested in “Akira.” The 1988 film, which had a budget almost equivalent to that of the “American film capital” at the time, set a new standard for domestic animation.
With its groundbreaking and daring style of expression, “Akira” has become a part of many popular cultures in other countries, including Hollywood's own homeland.
Other works in the romance genre such as “All the long nights,” the romantic comedy “We made a beautiful bouquet,” the psychological thriller “Matched,” and other genres such as “Haikyuu!! The junkyard battle”… promise to add more diversity in terms of theme, emotion, and storytelling to theatergoers.
Due to the peculiarity of Japanese cinema, which prioritizes domestic screening before reaching other markets, international audiences often have to wait quite a long time to see notable works. Vietnamese audiences interested in works from the Land of the Rising Sun are no exception.
This year, the Japanese Film Festival in Vietnam will come to Ho Chi Minh City from November 1-16, Da Nang from November 22-24, Hai Phong from December 6-8 and Hanoi from December 13-28. The specific screening schedule is announced on the program's official website; each screening costs 50,000 VND./.
