The first cancer surgery without leaving scars on the skin in Vietnam
Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Binh, Deputy Director of K Hospital, said that for the first time in Vietnam, doctors from the Department of Gynecology and Surgery, K Hospital, have successfully implemented the transvaginal endoscopic surgery technique to treat endometrial cancer for a 52-year-old patient.
The patient was admitted to the hospital with abnormal vaginal bleeding after menopause. After clinical examination, performing in-depth tests and multidisciplinary consultation, the patient was diagnosed with stage IA endometrial cancer and was indicated for laparoscopic surgery vNOTES.
The surgery lasted 2 hours. The doctors performed a complete hysterectomy, two adnexa, and bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection. After surgery, the patient had no external scars and much less pain than with other gynecological surgeries. Notably, the patient recovered quickly and was discharged early 3 days after surgery.
Previously, Dr. Le Tri Chinh, Department of Gynecological Surgery, K Hospital and his team successfully applied the vNOTES technique in other benign gynecological surgeries such as: ovarian tumor removal surgery, total hysterectomy to treat large uterine fibroids...
vNOTES is a transvaginal laparoscopic surgery technique, using the natural path to insert instruments into the abdominal cavity without having to cut the abdominal wall. This technique combines the advantages of laparoscopic surgery (clear images, delicate manipulation) and vaginal surgery without leaving external scars.
The vNOTES technique was initially applied in the treatment of benign gynecological diseases such as hysterectomy, adnexectomy (ovary, fallopian tube). Up to now, this technique has been indicated for early-stage gynecological cancers.
Surgery performed through the body's natural cavity, the vagina, without having to make an incision in the abdominal wall, has outstanding advantages, such as leaving no scars on the skin, reducing post-operative pain, reducing the risk of surgical site infection, quick recovery, allowing patients to return to normal life and work sooner with better quality of life, and reducing treatment costs.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Binh, the initial success in implementing the vNOTES technique at K Hospital not only opens up more safe, minimally invasive surgical options for patients, but also marks a strong shift in the application of advanced techniques, integrating international treatment trends.
In the coming time, the Hospital will continue to train and develop this technique to expand indications, bringing more optimal treatment opportunities for patients with gynecological cancer as well as benign gynecological diseases.
