(VCP)- Viet Duc Friendship Hospital has just successfully treated a patient with renal angiomyolipomas that spread to the right atrium. This is also the first case in Vietnam with the above disease to be successfully treated.
On October 3, Associate Professor, Dr. Do Truong Thanh, Head of the Department of Urology Surgery, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, said that in September 2023, patient HTH, 57 years old, Lang Son was hospitalized with epigastric pain. Ms. H said that she had a history of good health and had never been diagnosed with any special diseases.
About a month ago, the patient had abdominal pain above the navel. He went to the provincial hospital for examination and discovered a tumor in the right kidney and a tumor in the right atrium. He was transferred to two central hospitals but could not be operated on. Then the doctors decided to transfer the patient to the final hospital, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.
Here, patient H. was diagnosed with a right renal angiomyolipomas invading the vena cava and spreading to the right atrium. Doctors removed the right kidney, removed the entire tumor in the vena cava and tumor tissue in the right atrium.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Do Truong Thanh, the surgery lasted 240 minutes. This is one of the most difficult and challenging surgeries in the urology field. The case required the coordination of urological and cardiovascular surgeons, with heart-lung support. The cardiovascular team performed minimally invasive endoscopic surgery to avoid open chest surgery, helping the patient recover faster.
"This is a rare disease with a high risk of death because the tumor has occupied almost the entire right atrium. In the world , there have only been 6 cases of renal angiomyolipomas spreading to the right atrium. In Vietnam, there have been no reports of this disease," said Dr. Thanh.
Currently, the patient is stable, the drain was removed 4 days after surgery, can move around on his own and is expected to be discharged 10 days after surgery./.
