Faith in Nam Dich
In a highland village more than 40km from the commune center, since childhood, Vang A Ho, Nam Dich village, Cha Nua commune (Nam Po district) has only known how to work around the fields; after the corn planting season, he sows rice. The family's livelihood depends mainly on nature, with fragmented production and backward farming methods. Ho's parents were traditionally poor households in Nam Dich, with a large family, so when he decided to get married, move out and build a solid house, it was as difficult as finding a way to heaven. So it is not difficult to understand that after separating from his family in 2013, Ho continued to "follow in the footsteps" of his parents to become a poor household for more than ten years in Nam Dich. However, the story of Vang A Ho's family is now different!
One day in late August, even though the sun was high in the sky, Mr. Vang A Ho was still busy with the carpenters building the house frame. Although he was sweating profusely, Mr. Ho’s eyes shone with joy and excitement because in just a few weeks, his family would no longer have to live in a small, dilapidated house.
The new 5-room house is the "sweet fruit" of Mr. Ho's family after changing their mindset and making efforts to do business . Mr. Vang A Ho clearly realized that if he wanted to escape poverty, he must first strive to rise up, not rely on the State like before. Thinking and doing, after completing the vocational training class, he went to work as a welder in Hanoi with a stable income of 15-16 million VND/month and became the first household in Nam Dich to register to escape poverty.
With his own efforts, Mr. Ho received the attention of the Party Committee and the Nam Po District government after reviewing, and supported his family with 40 million VND to build a house from the capital of Project 5 (National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction). Although the support money and the family's savings were not enough to complete the house, Mr. Vang A Ho was not too worried, because he believed that he was capable of working to generate income to escape poverty.
Not only satisfied with the joy of fulfilling his dream of a new house, Mr. Ho also cherishes many other goals. The village has not been supplied with national grid electricity for long, so after having a new house, Mr. Ho plans to continue working to save money to buy a television and a milling machine to provide services, increasing his income. The house is completed, with audio-visual equipment, and his family will also fulfill the missing criteria, certainly becoming a household registered to successfully escape poverty in Nam Dich.
Being a remote village, Nam Dich is inhabited by two ethnic groups, Thai and Mong. The lives of the people here are still difficult, the poverty rate is high; especially the lack of quality housing, jobs or lack of nutrition, use of telecommunication services, means of accessing information... Therefore, the thoughts and initial success of Mr. Vang A Ho will be an example to motivate many poor households, especially the youth in the village to strive to rise up.
Focus on reducing by address
The family of Mr. Vang A Ho, Nam Dich village is one of 5 cases registered to escape poverty in Cha Nua commune (Nam Po district) in 2024. Previously, (in 2023), Cha Nua had 7 poor households registered to escape poverty and the result was that 100% of the registered households successfully escaped poverty.
Although people have changed their awareness and made efforts to do business, in reality, it is not enough to escape poverty sustainably. Based on the specific circumstances of each poor household, local authorities need to develop plans and propose appropriate support directions. In order to effectively implement the contents of the agreement to reduce the rate of poor households by address between the Chairman of the District People's Committee and the Chairmen of the People's Committees of Nam Po communes, ensuring that the target of reducing the number of poor households by 6% or more is achieved and exceeded, the Nam Po District People's Committee has developed a plan to organize a meeting between district leaders and households registered to escape poverty. However, the implementation process also encountered difficulties when no poor households expressed their opinions on what support they needed or what criteria they lacked.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Dai, Vice Chairman of Nam Po District People's Committee, said: To effectively reduce poverty, Nam Po District has determined that it is necessary to develop livelihood models, create jobs, and increase income to help poor households stabilize their economy. As with the employment shortage index, Nam Po District has recently reviewed and studied the specific employment status and aspirations of 31 households on the list of registered poverty reduction to mobilize, propagate, and directly advise those who are unemployed. In cases where people do not have means of production in the agricultural sector, the district will introduce, connect, and create conditions for them to participate in vocational training and work at companies and enterprises in and outside the province.
In the long term, to solve the problem of local employment, Nam Po has effectively implemented the Agricultural Restructuring Project, gradually linking agricultural production towards commodity production, linking people and businesses as currently implemented in some cinnamon and passion fruit models. Along with that, the district has also mobilized all resources to quickly complete infrastructure, especially roads, electricity, and information to create a favorable environment for people's production activities.
Not only Nam Po, the districts of Muong Ang, Muong Nhe, Tua Chua, Dien Bien also promote support programs and projects to ensure the achievement of poverty reduction targets and targets with addresses. Localities strengthen the socialization of support activities through mobilizing funds for the poor, movements to support poor households of associations and unions; encourage and facilitate volunteer activities, philanthropists inside and outside the province; mobilize the cooperation of businesses... to create resources to "fill" the missing criteria.
