Wordplay and wordplay: What is Samadhi Fire?

Since the 20th century, the phrase "samadhi fire" has appeared quite frequently in Vietnamese texts. Nowadays, because this term is less commonly used, some people do not understand what "samadhi fire" means.

"Samadhi Fire" is the Vietnamese term, derived from the Chinese phrases "Samadhi True Fire" (三昧真火), "Samadhi Divine Fire" (三昧神火), or "Samadhi Fire" (三昧火), terms frequently appearing in classical Chinese literature and Taoist culture.

Samadhi is a Buddhist term, translated from the Sanskrit word samādhi ( समाधि ), while true fire is a type of fire in Taoism. The combination of these two concepts forms the term true fire samadhi .

Samādhi ( समाधि ) means meditation, deep concentration, the powerful application or fixation of the mind; in Yoga, samadhi means stability, the union of the subject (the meditator) and the object (of meditation).

Samadhi is also called Samadhi (三摩地), Samadhi (三摩帝), Samadhi (三摩提), Samadhi-dhā (三昧地)... The meaning is Right Concentration (正定), Concentrated Mind (定意), Equal Holding (等持), Straight Concentration (調直定), Right Mind Conduct (正心行處)...

The definition of "samadhi" in Theravada Buddhism and Mahayana Buddhism is not entirely the same. However, it is one of the Buddhist practices, a way to eliminate distracting thoughts and calm the mind.

There are two ways to concentrate, called "samadhi" (定). These are: freeing oneself from delusion and drowsiness; and the effect of the mind, allowing the mind to focus on a single object without distraction. The first type of concentration is an innate ability, called "born samadhi" (生得定); the second is achieved through effort, called "later samadhi" (后得定). The first is achieved through the accumulation of virtue, while the latter is achieved through spiritual practice.

Regarding the concept of Samadhi , the Baidu encyclopedia states: "The heart is the supreme fire, hence called Upper Samadhi; the kidneys are the divine fire, hence called Middle Samadhi; the bladder is the common fire, hence called Lower Samadhi. The three energies converge to produce fire. This is the 'Samadhi fire' or 'Samadhi true fire '."

According to Taoism, the Samadhi True Fire is the genuine fire emitted by a person's primordial spirit, original energy, and original essence. In Journey to the West (chapter four), there is a passage that says: "He cultivated in the Flaming Mountain for three hundred years and refined the Samadhi True Fire, thus possessing great magical power."

In Đoàn Trung Còn's Buddhist Dictionary , the samadhi fire is called Hỏa diệm tam-mội (火燄三昧). The author explains: Samadhi is a type of "Great meditative practice that unleashes fire. Also called: Fire-generating Samadhi, Fire-light Samadhi. The Buddha once entered this samadhi state, and from his body emerged a powerful fire that subdued a venomous dragon." (Volume 2, 1966, p. 29).

In short, the samadhi fire is not an ordinary fire, but a fire arising from the heart's heat. This concept originates from Chinese, therefore the understanding is not entirely the same as the Sanskrit term samādhi ( समाधि ).

Different schools of thought held differing views on samādhi . Early Buddhism considered samādhi one of the ten fundamental precepts ( Sautrāntika ); the Vaibhāṣika school considered it one of the five special realms. In Vasubandhu 's Abhidharma-kośa , samādhi is defined as the mind constantly revolving in a single state.
