On the afternoon of March 3, Kpop girl group LE SSERAFIM with their newly released song "EASY" defeated BIBI's "Bam Yang Gang" and TWS's "Plot twist" to win on SBS's music show Inkigayo.
With this new win, LE SSERAFIM becomes the first Kpop girl group in 2024 to win an “All-Kill weekly trophy” - winning all 5 weekly music shows from Wednesday to Sunday.
Previously, the group won trophies on MBC's Show! Music Core on March 2; KBS's Music Bank on March 1; Mnet's M! Countdown on February 29, and MBC M's Show Champion broadcast on February 28.
LE SSERAFIM is making a successful comeback with the mini album “EASY”. The title track of the same name is also currently maintaining a high position on Korean music charts: Top 1 YouTube Music; Top 3 Bugs, Flo; Top 4 Melon, Genie, VIBE (as of 7:30 p.m. on March 3, Korean time).
However, despite achieving success on digital music and weekly music shows, LE SSERAFIM's comeback this time has given rise to controversy and mixed opinions regarding the group's live singing ability.
In the K-pop industry, the encore stage on Korean weekly music shows has become an important stage for idols to showcase their live singing ability. This encore stage is a “fear” for singers who are not good at live singing, because they will have to sing a cappella on most shows, without the support of overdubbing or lip-syncing like the performance on display.
On February 29, LE SSERAFIM appeared on M! Countdown to participate in the encore performance for the winner. But the group received a lot of criticism for their bad live singing, all 5 members were commented to sing too weakly, some sang off-key, far from the recording, especially Sakura was said to sing the worst live in the group.
Then, on the Music Bank program, LE SSERAFIM instead of singing live brought up the flute to play, taking up a lot of the performance time. A fan explained that LE SSERAFIM had promised this flute performance if they won, so this was a gift for fans.
But the flute performance was also judged to be bad even though it was prepared in advance. Many audiences thought that LE SSERAFIM deliberately played the flute to reduce the time they had to sing live.
Viewers commented on theqoo: “It seems like they're trying to avoid performing live at all costs”, “If they're singers, they need to sing live”, “They don't face the problem but completely avoid it”, “They're also terrible at playing the flute”…
From the controversy related to LE SSERAFIM, the issue of Kpop idols singing encore has also become a "hot" topic in recent days. 4th generation idols are rated lower in live singing ability compared to Gen 2 and Gen 3 Kpop idols.
