Since the early days of the nation's founding, naval warfare has been closely associated with the nation's history. Possessing a long coastline and a dense network of rivers, Vietnam soon formed a naval force that played a decisive role in many victories. From Ngo Quyen's Bach Dang victory in 938 to the resounding naval battles of the Tran - Nguyen dynasties, the image of warships has always been closely associated with the country's historical turning points.
"Than long kich thuy" consists of 5 chapters, summarizing the development process of Vietnamese warships through the dynasties: Tien Le, Ly, Tran - Ho, Hau Le, Tay Son and Nguyen dynasties. Besides the description of the shape, structure, manufacturing techniques and hydrodynamic components of the ships, the book also presents in detail the tactics and typical types of warships such as Mong Dong, Chu Kieu, Lau Thuyen, Ngu Bac...

The group of authors relied on many important historical sources, carefully consulted, annotated and compared such as: " Le Dynasty Hoi Dien" - a rare document recording the technical specifications of warships during the Le Trung Hung period; " Kham Dinh Dai Nam Hoi Dien Su Le" and " Thuyen Bac Danh Hieu Do Thuc" specifically describing the type of Nguyen Dynasty ships. Foreign research works such as: " Sketch of Vietnamese Maritime Ethnology" by Pierre Paris, " Indochina Sailboats" by JB Pietri, " Chinese Sailboats: Indochina" by Louis Audemard.
By taking an interdisciplinary approach – history, technology, culture and military – the group of authors not only recreates the image of Vietnamese sailors but also clearly outlines the strategic thinking and creative vision of their ancestors. The book is also impressive with the elaborate illustrations by artist Kaovjets Ngujens and a series of photos of model boats taken by Dong Nguyen at the Vietnam History Museum.

With rich sources of materials and an interdisciplinary approach between history, technology, culture and military, "Thần long kích thủy" is not only a research work but also a beautifully illustrated book, easy to access for young readers. All the images in the book were drawn by Kaovjets Ngujens, combined with photos of the boat model taken by Đông Nguyễn at the Vietnam History Museum and many other valuable paintings and documentary photos.
Dong Nguyen is a researcher on history, customs, weapons, co-founder of research groups such as: Dai Viet Co Phong, Vietnam Centre, Vuong Su Kien Due... Kaovjets Ngujens - Latvian artist of Vietnamese origin - specializes in historical illustration, collaborated with Dong Nguyen in the project " Kyrgyz Art" (Kim Dong Publishing House). The project " Than Long Kich Thuy" received professional support from researchers: Do Thai Binh , Tran Trong Duong, Nguyen Viet, Le Thi Lien, Pham Le Huy, Phan Thanh Nam, Nguyen Van Hieu.
