Prime Minister -designate of Finland Petteri Orpo (PO-Pô) said that the four-party coalition, including the National Coalition Party (NCP), the far-right Finnish Party (FP), the Swedish People's Party (RKP) and the Christian Democrats, has agreed to form a government after more than two months of general elections in this Nordic country.
Speaking at a press conference in Helsinki with leaders of three other parties, Mr. Orpo expressed his joy at the results achieved after the negotiations, and also gave details of the plan to form a new government announced on June 16.
The four parties hold 108 seats in the 200-seat parliament . Formal negotiations between the NCP, led by Mr Orpo, and the other three coalition parties have been underway since May 2. Negotiations to form a government in Finland usually last about a month.
The negotiations were fraught with challenges, revolving around development aid, immigration and climate. During the discussions, the FP’s position was in sharp contrast to the RKP’s. In particular, the FP campaigned for a hard line on immigration, while the RKP saw immigration as vital to solving Finland’s aging population.
Mr Orpo said that although they disagreed on some issues, both parties were united in wanting to ensure stability for Finland. The FP and the conservative NCP were part of Finland's centre-right government from 2015 to 2017. The coalition collapsed when the FP split into two groups: one centrist and one hardliner. Currently, only the hardliners of the FP continue to be in parliament.
In the general election in April this year, the Social Democratic Party of outgoing Prime Minister Sanna Marin (X.Marin) fell to third place with only 43 seats, behind Mr. Orpo's NCP (48 seats) and the FP (46 seats).
