As the weather has just turned cold, Cam Khe Regional Medical Center has continuously admitted 6 cases with symptoms of crooked mouth, eyes not closing properly, and doctors diagnosed them with peripheral facial paralysis (7th cranial nerve palsy) due to cold.
According to doctors, facial paralysis due to cold, also known as Bell's palsy, is a condition of sudden weakness or paralysis of one side of the facial muscles. Patients often have crooked mouths, eyes that cannot close completely, difficulty speaking, and difficulty eating. The main cause is due to peripheral cranial nerve VII being constricted, swollen, or damaged when exposed to sudden cold wind.
Common symptoms include: sagging face, loss of wrinkles on the paralyzed side of the forehead, crooked mouth to one side (obvious when smiling), difficulty closing or opening the eyes wide when sleeping, accompanied by pain around the ear, head, jaw, difficulty speaking, dry mouth or abnormal salivation.
Doctors say the disease often increases during the changing seasons when temperatures change suddenly. People with low immunity, who often stay up late, drink alcohol or ride motorbikes without covering their face and neck are more susceptible to the disease.
To prevent, people need to keep their bodies warm, wear hats, masks, and scarves when going out; avoid direct wind on the face, especially when sleeping; do not bathe late at night, do not let the body get cold after drinking alcohol; increase exercise, and eat scientifically to improve resistance.
Doctors advise: if peripheral facial paralysis is not detected and treated early, it can leave permanent sequelae. When symptoms such as crooked mouth, eyes not closing tightly, or spilling water while drinking appear, people should go to a medical facility for examination and not self-treat at home. Late or incorrect treatment can cause nerve degeneration, making it difficult to fully recover.
