The first patient was Ms. NTT (85 years old, in Trieu Son, Thanh Hoa ), admitted to the hospital on April 28 with a diagnosis of 8% third-degree burns on the face, neck, and chest on the 5th day, in a state of infection and extensive tissue necrosis.
The cause was that Ms. T was burned by fire but did not go to a medical facility but listened to an acquaintance's advice and applied tobacco with unknown ingredients, then the burned area became infected and necrotic...
When the condition worsened, the family took him to Le Huu Trac National Burn Hospital for treatment. Currently, after a period of treatment, the patient's condition is stable and he is in the process of recovery.
Another case is patient TMP (71 years old, in Trang Dinh, Lang Son ), admitted to the hospital on April 24, diagnosed with 6% third-degree burns from applying tobacco on the abdomen, thighs and buttocks on the 22nd day. The cause was due to the patient applying tobacco (fish mint) himself. After 5 days, many blisters appeared and then spread to healthy skin.
The wound progressed badly, the patient's general condition showed signs of worsening, so the family took the patient to Lang Son Provincial Hospital for treatment. After that, the provincial hospital continued to transfer the patient to Le Huu Trac National Burn Hospital for treatment. Currently, the patient's condition is basically recovered, and his general condition is stable.
The third case is patient PTDQ (22 years old, in Phu Xuyen, Hanoi), admitted to the hospital on April 28 with a diagnosis of 9% boiling water burn, second degree, left leg on the 8th day. The patient said he had applied traditional medicine to treat the burn and was promised a cure.
After applying the medicine 3 times, the wound still secreted a lot of fluid, so the patient went to Le Huu Trac National Burn Hospital on the 8th day of the illness. Although the burn in this case was not severe, the burn was shallow, but due to subjectivity and believing the herbalist's advice to apply the medicine, it led to infection. After a period of treatment, the patient's burn injury was cured and he was discharged from the hospital.
The danger of applying medicine of unknown origin
According to burn specialists at the Le Huu Trac National Burn Hospital, many types of “cigarettes” used by people to treat burns are actually of unknown composition, not medically tested, and are prepared manually. The ingredients in the drugs may contain impurities, allergens, or harmful microorganisms.
Applying directly to open wounds such as burns can easily lead to infection, ulcers, necrosis, and even sepsis - a dangerous complication that can be fatal if not treated promptly.
In addition, many people mistakenly think that “tobacco” is harmless and can be used indiscriminately. In fact, if used incorrectly, in the wrong dose or not as prescribed, oriental medicine can also cause serious side effects, especially when used to treat open wounds such as burns.
Therefore, doctors recommend: “Burn treatment must follow a medical regimen, depending on the severity of the burn, you can use topical ointments, moist gauze, or skin graft surgery. Absolutely do not arbitrarily apply any unproven medicine because it can easily make the injury worse.”
"When burned, proper first aid is the most important factor. Immediately after being burned, it is necessary to cool the wound with clean water (room temperature) for 15 - 20 minutes, then cover with sterile gauze and quickly take the burned person to a medical facility," the doctor added.
