Impressive growth
According to Mr. Tran Gia Long - Deputy Director of the Department of Planning and Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , the first quarter was a memorable period for the agricultural sector when it recorded a growth rate of 3.74% - the highest level in many years.
In April alone, the industry's total export turnover reached 5.5 billion USD, up 5.4% over the same period last year. In the four months, the total export turnover reached 21 billion USD, of which agricultural products accounting for 11 billion USD, forestry products over 5 billion USD and aquatic products 3 billion USD. Livestock products and production inputs also recorded growth rates of 16.8% and 20% respectively.
Notably, there are up to 6 agricultural products with high value. export over 1 billion USD, 2 items reached over 3 billion USD and most key items achieved higher export value than the same period last year.
Besides, market expansion achieved many positive results when export value to regions such as Europe, America and Africa all increased sharply.
In particular, Africa recorded a record increase of 78% compared to the same period last year. The European market increased by 37%, while the Americas increased by 12%, clearly demonstrating the flexible and correct shift of the Vietnamese agricultural sector in reducing dependence on traditional markets.
However, some challenges remain. Exports to Asia - the main market - decreased slightly by more than 1%. This requires the agricultural sector to continue negotiating and removing technical barriers to maintain its competitive position.
On the other hand, the import turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in the first four months of the year reached nearly 16 billion USD, up 16.6%. Of which, the main import groups such as aquatic products, livestock products and production inputs all had double-digit increases. However, maintaining the level trade surplus More than 5 billion USD is still an encouraging result in the context of input costs and logistics still under pressure.
Coffee is the brightest 'star'
Among the strong export items in the first 5 months of the year, coffee is becoming the most prominent phenomenon with an export value of up to 3.8 billion USD, an increase of more than 50% compared to the same period last year. This success comes not only from output, but especially thanks to the average export price soaring to nearly 5,700 USD/ton - up 67.5% compared to the previous year. This is a record high price in recent years, reflecting the growing attractiveness of Vietnamese coffee in the global market.
Not to be outdone, the shrimp industry also showed strong growth with export turnover reaching 1.2 billion USD, up 28%. Wood and wood products continued to maintain their role as a key industry with an export value of 5.2 billion USD, up nearly 6%. Meanwhile, rubber reached over 860 million USD (up 19%), pepper and cashew nuts also had positive growth thanks to an average selling price increase of over 60% for some items.
However, not all items had positive results. Rice - one of the mainstays of exports - unexpectedly decreased by 14%, to only 1.8 billion USD. The average export price of rice also dropped sharply by 20%, to only 514 USD/ton.
Similarly, fruit and vegetable exports also recorded a 14% decrease to US$1.6 billion. This shows fierce competition and increasing demands from the international market on quality, traceability and food safety standards.
Faced with complex fluctuations in the world market, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has been synchronously implementing many solutions to support consumption, stabilize prices and develop the market.
According to Mr. Tran Gia Long - Deputy Director of the Department of Planning and Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the Ministry is focusing on completing the Project on developing a logistics system for agricultural products until 2030, providing guidance on regulating production plans and handling food safety incidents. In addition, efforts to negotiate market expansion, especially in the UK and Germany, are also being promoted.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is also build Periodic agricultural product consumption bulletins aim to provide timely market information to businesses and localities, and closely report on the agricultural trade situation with major partners such as the United States, Japan and China.
