Armed forces uphold heroic tradition

DTO - The armed forces of Dong Thap province have gone through years of steadfast fighting, achieved many glorious feats, contributing to the overall victory of the nation. Continuing that heroic tradition, the provincial armed forces have constantly strived to build a strong force in all aspects, meeting the requirements of the task of protecting the Fatherland in the new situation.

HISTORICAL ACHIEVEMENTS

March 12, 1945 marked a historical turning point with the Directive "The Japanese and French fight each other and our actions" of the Central Party Standing Committee, opening a new page for the Vietnamese revolution. Responding to that spirit, in Dong Thap, on August 24, 1945, the Dong Thap Provincial Uprising Committee was established, a strategic decision when mobilizing guerrilla forces from Cao Lanh and Lap Vo districts to support the uprising to seize power in Sa Dec. On the morning of August 25, 1945, under the revolutionary flag, the guerrilla forces and the masses took control of Sa Dec provincial capital. In the afternoon of the same day, the Provincial Party Committee decided to establish the first Company and the Military Committee - the predecessor of the present-day Provincial Military Command, marking the proud birth of the provincial armed forces.

Mentioning the provincial armed forces is mentioning glorious feats of arms, written by intelligence, bravery and courageous fighting spirit. During the years of resistance war against the US to save the country, the provincial armed forces played a core role in the locality, fought bravely, together with the whole country to defeat the war of aggression of the US imperialists. The provincial armed forces participated in the General Offensive and Uprising in the Spring of 1975, the peak of which was the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign, liberating the province, completely liberating the South, and reunifying the country.

A typical example is the battle on the So Thuong River, where our army sank the D-27 ship, killed and wounded 170 Euro-African soldiers, and captured more than 90 guns of various types, a resounding victory that thrilled the army and people. Or the glorious victory at Giong Thi Dam - Go Quan Cung, defeating the main regimental march of the puppet army, eliminating 200 enemies from the battle, completely destroying Battalion 3 and causing heavy damage to Battalion 2, capturing 127 guns, 12 communication machines and many military uniforms and equipment on the spot. In the decisive battle and victory, the US Marines on the Nguyen Van Tiep Canal became a brilliant milestone, with the burning and sinking of 37 ships, eliminating 1,400 enemies from the battle, completely bankrupting the US-puppet "Small Fleet on the River" campaign, contributing significantly to the overall victory of the nation.

After the country was at peace, the provincial armed forces continued to undertake noble tasks. In April 1977, when the southwestern border was violated, the provincial armed forces did not fear hardship, fought for nearly 2 years to protect the border and 10 years of international duty in Cambodia. The provincial armed forces stood shoulder to shoulder with the people of the neighboring country, shared difficulties, eased the pain of loss, hunted down the remnants of the Pol Pot army, saved people from hunger and suffering, helped the neighboring country build its government and revolutionary forces, restored and developed production, and stabilized life. That noble international solidarity has been trusted and loved by the Cambodian people and government.

CONTINUING THE HEROIC TRADITION

Promoting the heroic tradition, the provincial armed forces have continuously grown in all aspects, striving to build a strong and comprehensive unit, improving training capacity and combat readiness. As the core force, the provincial armed forces have always been a reliable support and effective advisor to local Party committees and authorities in the work of building a strong national defense, state management of national defense, making an important contribution to socio-economic development and maintaining peace for the homeland of the Red Lotus Land.

Along with the task of building forces, training, and combat readiness, the provincial military has also proactively coordinated with other forces, not afraid of difficulties, hardships, and sacrifices, promptly present at the front lines to help people prevent, combat, and overcome the consequences of natural disasters and epidemics. Specifically, during the Covid-19 pandemic, thousands of officers and soldiers volunteered to participate at checkpoints, concentrated quarantine areas, and field hospitals, making an important contribution to helping the government and people quickly repel the epidemic; at the same time, helping people harvest, transport, and consume hundreds of thousands of tons of agricultural products, overcoming the difficulties caused by the pandemic.

Inheriting and promoting the glorious tradition of previous generations, over the years, the Party Committee - Provincial Military Command has always proactively advised the Party Committee - Military Region 9 Command and the Provincial Party Committee and Provincial People's Committee in effectively leading and directing the implementation of local defense and military work. At the same time, it has focused on fostering the capacity to lead and direct military and defense tasks for cadres at all levels; perfecting the mechanism and regulations for the construction and operation of defense zones; clearly defining the functions, tasks and responsibilities of all levels and sectors in building a national defense and a solid defense potential and posture.

Colonel Nguyen Huu Cuong - Commander of the Provincial Military Command said that every year, the Provincial Military Command directs agencies and units to develop a complete system of documents directing training and exercises closely and seriously implementing the combat training orders of the Commander of Military Region 9. At the same time, actively advise the Provincial Party Committee and Provincial People's Committee in directing, operating, and closely coordinating with the Border Guard, Police and departments, branches, and socio-political organizations to synchronously and comprehensively deploy military and defense tasks.

To improve the quality of training, the Party Committee - Provincial Military Command has concretized and seriously implemented the resolutions of the superiors on improving the quality of training with many policies and measures suitable to the actual conditions of the agencies and units. In training, it is important to focus on practical, synchronous, in-depth training, mastering existing technical equipment and night training; improving the quality of comprehensive tactical drills, tactical drills with live ammunition, and KVPT drills close to the terrain conditions of the river delta and actual combat. In particular, the provincial military focuses on training and improving mobility by marching on foot and using vehicles through complex terrains.

In ensuring political security and social order and safety, the armed forces proactively coordinate closely with forces stationed in the area, forecast the situation to advise the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial People's Committee to propose policies and timely solutions to handle issues related to national defense and security. In particular, the coordination between the three forces: Police, Military, Border Guard is deployed synchronously and effectively. In the first quarter of 2025, the three forces coordinated to patrol to ensure security and order and traffic safety in more than 5,260 cases with the participation of nearly 35,460 officers and soldiers. The authorities drew up records to fine 636 cases of traffic safety violations; dispersed more than 2,520 young people gathering late at night, showing signs of violating the law, 365 gambling spots; Arrested and handled 74 cases/221 criminals and violators of laws on social order, economy, drugs, environment, and social evils.

Regarding force building, the Provincial Military Command directed agencies and units to focus on perfecting the organization and staffing in the direction of "elite, compact, strong", prioritizing ensuring the number of troops for combat-ready units, on the border line, and key areas of national defense and security. The militia and self-defense force is built according to the motto "Strong, widespread", with high political quality, reasonable structure and composition, suitable to the characteristics of the area. Promoting the tradition of the heroic homeland, every year, the youth of the Red Lotus Land continue the tradition of "Uncle Ho's soldiers" enthusiastically enlisting to ensure enough troops assigned by superiors, contributing to consolidating and building the national defense, building a strong armed force, meeting the requirements of tasks in the new situation.

With constant efforts and a high sense of responsibility, the People's Armed Forces of Dong Thap province are growing stronger and stronger, continuing to promote the heroic tradition in fighting the enemy, contributing to the cause of building and firmly defending the Fatherland.
