After three and a half seasons with Liverpool, the Colombian winger has officially completed his transfer to Bayern Munich, another giant of European football.

Diaz decided to change his playing environment exactly 1 year before the 2026 World Cup, a tournament in which Colombia is sprinting in the South American qualifying round .

The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract with Bayern Munich , with an option to extend for a further 12 months. He will wear the number 14 shirt at the Allianz Arena, replacing the number 7 he wore in his final season with Liverpool.

This is the biggest deal the Bundesliga champions have made in this summer transfer window , with a fee of around 75 million euros.

D i az left Liverpool's training camp in Japan on Sunday to fly to Germany, where he passed a medical and began his first training session on Wednesday afternoon (July 30).

“From today I am part of this wonderful family , D i az said in a video posted on Bayern Munich’s social media . He called Bayern “one of the biggest clubs in the world .”

In Colombia, the transfer sparked debate over whether Diaz should leave the Premier League – considered the world's top league – as well as Liverpool, where he is beloved by the fans .

The problem that made Diaz leave was that his salary at Liverpool was quite low compared to other stars - 3.38 million euros (or 55,000 pounds/week; less than half of Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Chiesa or Gravenberch) .

Aside from his income (which is expected to triple at least), Diaz has a reason to leave: in FIFA's latest global club rankings, Bayern is 3rd , Liverpool 6th. He follows the path of Sadio Mane a few years ago.

Diaz was a late bloomer, but made rapid progress in Europe, from Porto to Liverpool. He was also a long-term target for Barcelona, before signing Marcus Rashford due to financial difficulties.

Last season, it was Diaz's versatility – even some central attacking performances – that helped Liverpool lift the Premier League.

Lucho – as he is affectionately known to his home fans – scored 17 goals in 50 official games for Liverpool last season, and also scored a classy goal against Argentina in Colombia’s 1-1 draw in Buenos Aires , a 2026 World Cup qualifier .

That's why Bayern did everything to get him, after parting ways with Leroy Sane and Thomas Muller, and Jamal Musiala was seriously injured.

“Luis Diaz is an experienced, high-quality player with excellent technique and is very reliable. He will immediately bring us strength , ” praised Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl .
