The third competition day of the 2025 Southeast Asian Youth Athletics Championship (U18-U20 age group) held on the morning of November 17 in Indonesia witnessed another important milestone for Vietnamese athletics when young athlete Luong Thi Khan successfully defended her Gold Medal in the U18 women's 3,000m event. This achievement not only affirmed the talent of the runner born in 2008 but also contributed the eighth gold medal for the Vietnamese team at this year's tournament.

Luong Thi Khan entered the women's 3,000m event as the defending champion. A year ago, at the tournament held in Malaysia, Khan won gold with an impressive time of 10 minutes 18 seconds 88, just 0.29 seconds short of the tournament record. That performance made her name as one of the most outstanding young athletes in the U18 age group in the region.
In his return this year, although his time of 10 minutes 19 seconds 52 did not surpass his previous record, Khan still competed overwhelmingly to finish first, surpassing two opponents from Indonesia and Singapore. The convincing victory shows the stability in performance as well as the competitive spirit of young Vietnamese athletes when they continuously reap achievements in the international arena.
With this gold medal, Luong Thi Khan continues to demonstrate remarkable progress throughout 2025. Previously, she was called up to participate in the Asian Youth Athletics Championships for the U18 age group, a playground that gathers the region's top talents. Impressive international achievements have helped Khan receive high praise from industry experts for her long-term development potential.
In the domestic arena, Luong Thi Khan also had an excellent year. At the National Youth Athletics Championship held in June in Lai Chau , she won the gold medal in the U18 women's 5,000m event, breaking the age group record with a time of 17 minutes 22 seconds 29. Outstanding achievements in many distances show the young runner's diverse abilities, especially in events that require great endurance.
Among the young athletes of Vietnam’s athletics today, Luong Thi Khan is considered one of the brightest faces alongside Hoang Thi Ngoc Anh, Thu Huong or Mui Sau. These are all promising talents in the middle and long-distance running events such as 3,000m, 5,000m and 3,000m steeplechase. They are expected to be worthy successors, capable of continuing the success of their senior Nguyen Thi Oanh, who has dominated endurance running events in the region for many years.
Luong Thi Khan’s gold medal in Indonesia is not only a memorable milestone in her young career, but also a positive signal for Vietnamese athletics in major tournaments in the future. The maturity of athletes like Khan shows that youth training is bringing clear results, opening up hope for a generation of athletes inheriting talent, courage and a strong desire to conquer the top.
