Change towards practice and develop students' capacity

In just about a month, the 2025 high school graduation exam will officially take place. This year, the graduation exam is organized according to the 2018 generaleducation program with many notable changes in the exam structure.

Among them, math is one of the subjects with many new points, making many students feel confused, not knowing how to review effectively and appropriately to the requirements of the test.

The 2025 math exam is designed with 3 parts (I, II and III) with increasing difficulty, focusing on practical problems and assessing students' thinking ability. Instead of 50 multiple choice questions as before, the exam is shortened to about 24 questions with diverse answer formats: Multiple choice, true/false and short answer.

Part I (3 points) consists of 12 multiple choice questions at the recognition and understanding levels. Part II (4 points) consists of 4 true/false multiple choice questions, each with 4 sub-questions arranged according to the level from recognition, understanding to application.

Part III (3 points) has 6 short answer multiple choice questions, focusing entirely on application and advanced application types.

It can be seen that advanced questions to differentiate students will be mainly in parts II and III. These are questions that require the ability to synthesize knowledge related to real-life situations in society.

Thu Trang (Luong Dac Bang High School, Thanh Hoa ) feels confused and has difficulty in reviewing for the exam according to this new program. She often loses points in the true/false questions and short answer questions because her knowledge is broad, there are many new types of questions that can easily fool students.

Thu Giang (Minh Khai High School, Hanoi) also shares the same concern. She said that the short answer section requires very deep knowledge and good data analysis skills.

"In this part, I had a lot of difficulty not knowing how to extract data from the question. Sometimes I found the data but didn't know how to apply it because there were too many formulas," Thu Giang confided.

Not only students, teachers are also facing challenges in the process of accompanying students in exam preparation. Mr. Pham Huu Dao, a math teacher at Thanh Ha High School (Hai Duong), commented that this year's math exam was much more difficult, leading to a difference in the way students reviewed the exam compared to previous years.

Teachers and students need to carefully study the exam structure, learn new math formats, and at the same time, closely follow the sample exam questions published by the Ministry of Education and Training to build a systematic and effective review plan. General review is no longer suitable, what needs to be done is to carefully invest in each topic to develop students' thinking ability.

Practice regularly, grasp the knowledge of each part

According to Mr. Dao, the first 12 questions in the exam are the most basic part. Students only need to master the knowledge to be able to get a score on these questions.

4 true/false answers require a broader range of knowledge. Students need to read the questions carefully, check the logic of the ideas and be careful when doing them to avoid unnecessary mistakes.

As for practical problems related to integrals, antiderivatives, vectors, geometric shapes... students must try to practice many different types of problems.

Sharing the same opinion, Ms. Pham Thi La, a math teacher (Thanh Ha High School, Hai Duong) shared that this year's exam focuses on grade 12 knowledge but still incorporates grade 10 and 11 content. Therefore, it is necessary to always research, dig deeper, learn and be creative during the exam preparation process.

In previous years, students had difficulty mainly with problems related to parameters, but this year, the exam has shifted to practical problems that require high application skills. This makes it difficult for students to score points and easy to lose points.

Ms. La believes that, in the current situation, students should review each topic carefully, from basic to advanced, from easy to difficult exercises to understand the essence instead of memorizing. She also advises students to practice reading comprehension skills, data analysis and the ability to apply interdisciplinary knowledge to do well in practical problems.

According to Ms. La, all exam content still adheres to the curriculum. Therefore, in addition to systematizing knowledge, practicing questions is the best method to help students review effectively for the exam.

This method not only helps students understand knowledge more deeply, grasp many new solving methods, but also train themselves in logical thinking, analytical and reasoning skills as well as knowing how to apply that knowledge to difficult problems.

"Only when exposed to many different types of problems can students develop good reflexes and thinking skills to flexibly handle problems effectively," Ms. La emphasized.
