Man United change their view on Cunha

Before Matheus Cunha arrived at Old Trafford, some voices in English football warned that the Brazilian could be “a difficult character to get along with”.

Cunha is integrating with Manchester United.

But just a few months later, the Manchester United dressing room has a different answer – and it's a positive one.

Cunha, who joined Man United in the summer of 2025, became Ruben Amorim’s first signing after the club activated his £62.5m release clause with Wolves. He arrived with a reputation as a prolific goalscorer – he scored 15 goals and provided six assists in the Premier League last season – but also with questions about his adaptability and attitude to the big environment of Old Trafford.

Within weeks, those doubts had faded. Cunha quickly integrated into Amorim’s system, playing cohesively, pressing hard, and especially shining in the 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield. Although he has yet to score or assist, he is still highly regarded internally for his ability to hold the ball, relieve pressure on Bruno Fernandes, and control the tempo of the game in the final minutes. The Sun said Man United players were “completely convinced by the maturity and team spirit” that Cunha brings.

Concerns about his “difficult personality” were quickly allayed. One insider described his sessions with Cunha as “almost entirely positive”. He quickly settled in, even developing a close relationship with defender Luke Shaw – a reflection of his openness and professionalism that few expected.

Cunha missed the Manchester derby with a hamstring injury, but has returned strongly and is likely to start when the Red Devils host Brighton this weekend. The 26-year-old has yet to score, but it looks like it is only a matter of time.

While former Man City defender Joleon Lescott quipped that “Man United are buying second-rate players”, at Old Trafford the opposite is true. Amorim has found in Cunha a player who knows how to sacrifice, who can play for his teammates and who is willing to fight for the team.

And if Man United continue to maintain their momentum after the victory at Anfield, it will not be surprising if Matheus Cunha himself becomes the symbol of the "Red Devils"'s rebuilding spirit - a rookie who was doubted, but is gradually making everyone change their perspective.
