Bringing 'bad luck' leaves to swim in the sea at noon on the Dragon Boat Festival

Many Phu Yen people bring all kinds of aromatic leaves, and at exactly 12 noon on the Doan Ngo Festival, they go to the beach to bathe in the belief that it will "dispel bad luck" and drive away bad luck and illness.

At noon on May 31, many people were present at Dong Tac beach (Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen ) early, waiting for exactly 12 noon to bathe to ward off bad luck and illness on the occasion of Doan Ngo festival.

The special thing here is that people bring handfuls of leaves to bathe in the sea and use the leaves to rub and scrub all over their bodies.

Ms. Le Thi Loan (43 years old, resident of Phu Lam ward, Tuy Hoa city) brought a large bag containing familiar leaves such as ginseng, piper lolot, tamarind, betel leaves... to go swimming in the sea.

“People in my hometown believe that the Duanwu Festival is also a doctor’s day, so they bring leaves to bathe. These leaves are easy to find and grow around the garden, mainly fragrant leaves. When bathing, I use a handful of leaves to rub all over my body, especially my head, shoulders, forehead, chest, etc. to drive away illness and welcome good luck,” said Ms. Loan.

Ms. Nguyen Nhu Ai (32 years old, Tuy Hoa resident) said that she and her family arrived here at 11am, but stayed on the beach. As soon as the clock struck 12, the whole family rushed to the beach to swim.

“The ancients believed that bathing in the sea on the Duanwu Festival must be done at exactly 12 noon to get rid of “bugs”, wash away bad things in the year, and pray for health and fortune, so every year my family and I bathe in the sea on this occasion,” Ms. Ai shared.

Also on the occasion of the Duanwu Festival, almost all markets from the countryside to Phu Yen city, shops selling aromatic leaves, or traditional medicine shops are visited by many people to buy... not only for bathing but also to boil and drink to purify the body.
