Recently, traditional shrimp farming in Tran Van Thoi district is no longer effective, income from shrimp is unstable. In addition to shrimp seeds, farmers also face many difficulties due to drought, environmental pollution, and diseases.
Faced with the above situation, the district organized many training courses to help farmers quickly access techniques and apply them to shrimp farming effectively.
Thanks to the application of science and technology in shrimp farming, people can rest assured when the season is good.
Through training, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Liem, Tan Thanh hamlet, Phong Lac commune, boldly applied 2-phase shrimp farming. He said that when renovating the square, he killed all the trash fish, bought a net to cover the surface of the square, 4 m wide, 20 m long to raise the fry. When water is supplied, the fry will be released into the net so that the shrimp can adapt to the water source and find their own food. With 2.2 hectares, he raises 50,000 shrimp fry, after 20-25 days he transfers the shrimp to a larger farming area. At this time, through phase 2, the shrimp grow and develop well.
Mr. Liem shared: “Compared to the traditional farming method, 2-phase farming is more effective, with a high survival rate. Last year, I successfully raised shrimp, each shrimp reached a size of 20 shrimp/kg, earning 70 million VND, very excited”. According to Mr. Liem, you must choose quality shrimp to raise effectively, you should not release too much, only about 5-10 shrimp/m2 so that the shrimp will grow quickly; after releasing the shrimp, every month you will raise another batch of shrimp to rotate to the next crop.
After attending the training course, taking advantage of the abandoned industrial shrimp settling tank, Mr. Nguyen Tan Phuc (Tan Thanh hamlet, Phong Lac commune) renovated, treated and disinfected, then released shrimp fry, starting a 2-phase shrimp farming. With more than 6 hectares, he released sparsely, each time releasing only 60,000 shrimp fry, feeding the shrimp to help them grow quickly and become stronger, then releasing the shrimp to a larger area.
Mr. Phuc shared how to do it: “After about 7 days of using fish medicine, lime will be sprinkled and microorganisms will be planted in the square, then shrimp and duckweed will be released for about 15-20 days. When the shrimp grow well, they will be transferred to a larger area. About a month later, buy NPK fertilizer with DAP and mix it again and add it to the square to create water color, create algae, help the shrimp have enough food, and from there, raise them effectively. Last year, I made a profit of more than 200 million VND. This season, I will do it more systematically, hopefully it will be successful and have a good price.”
Mr. Phu Van Tam, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Phong Lac commune, said: "The Farmers' Association and the Department of Agriculture and Environment (DARD) of the district organized training courses. Through that, people gradually changed their farming methods, applying science and technology of improved extensive shrimp farming in 2 stages, both bringing high economic efficiency and controlling diseases throughout the farming process. The model gives people a revenue of 150-200 million VND/ha/year".
In addition to 2-stage shrimp farming, people also raise crabs to achieve productivity.
With the transfer of science and technology, using capital sources from the province and district, the Department of Agriculture and Environment is assigned to be the investor. Accordingly, the Department builds models and projects to transfer to farmers, including the 2-phase improved extensive shrimp farming model. At the same time, coordinate with the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, District Agricultural Extension Station and People's Committees of communes and towns to organize transfers to farmers, through models, projects, training, and seminars. Thereby, people apply them to actual production, so the output and quality of farmed shrimp increase, contributing to increasing household income and developing the local socio-economy.
Currently, the entire Tran Van Thoi district has 17,000 hectares of shrimp farming, of which the improved extensive shrimp farming area is 15,400 hectares, the improved extensive shrimp farming area in phase 2 is 11,031 hectares, with 6,604 farming households. Implementing the direction of the Provincial People's Committee, the District People's Committee, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the district coordinated with communes and towns to review the improved extensive shrimp farming area in phase 2 that is eligible to participate in the chain linkage. As a result, there are 9,562 hectares with 5,572 households eligible to register to participate.
