Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on July 25 that Shengjia Zhao, co-founder of OpenAI's ChatGPT, will take on the role of chief scientist at Meta Superintelligence Labs, the company's new artificial superintelligence research lab.

In recent weeks, Mark Zuckerberg has been on a multibillion-dollar AI recruiting spree, highlighted by a $14 billion investment in Scale AI.
In June, Zuckerberg announced the creation of Meta Superintelligence Labs, bringing together the world's top AI researchers and engineers.
Zhao’s name was mentioned in June along with other new hires, but Zuckerberg has now confirmed that Zhao is “our lead scientist from day one.” Zhao will work directly with Zuckerberg and Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, who is now Meta’s chief AI officer.
“Shengjia has made many important breakthroughs and has established himself as a leader in the field of AI. I look forward to working closely with him to advance his scientific vision,” Zuckerberg wrote on social media.
In addition to co-creating ChatGPT, Zhao played a key role in the development of AI models such as GPT-4, mini models, GPT-4.1, and o3 at OpenAI. Zhao was also a leader in synthetic data during his time at the company.
Meta Superintelligence Labs will be where employees focus on developing foundational models, including the open source Llama family, AI products, as well as pioneering fundamental AI research projects.
Zuckerberg said Meta will invest “hundreds of billions of dollars” in computing infrastructure for AI in the coming years.
