The extension until 2028 is strategic, not only ensuring he will be present at the 2026 World Cup in the US but also opening up the opportunity to participate in the Copa America taking place in mid-2028, if the superstar maintains good physical condition.
American media revealed that with the new contract, Messi will continue to maintain his position as the highest-paid player in MLS with an estimated income of about 20.4 million USD per year.
Notably, the new contract still retains a special clause that allows the Argentine superstar to become a co-owner of Inter Miami after he retires, along with current owners Jorge Mas, Jose Mas and David Beckham.
Since joining Inter Miami in July 2023, Messi has immediately made a huge impact, helping the team win the 2023 Leagues Cup, their first title in history.
At the age of 38, he still maintained his impressive form with 29 goals and 19 assists in the 2025 season, thereby winning the title of Best Player of the Season and MLS Golden Boot, affirming his legendary status in the US.
He is also the first player in MLS history to score two or more goals in 10 games, in a single season.
Lionel Messi is still open to the possibility of participating in the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the US, Mexico and Canada. If the superstar participates in the biggest football festival on the planet next year, he will turn 39 and it could be the last time fans will see the Argentine legend play in the World Cup arena.
