On June 3, Meta - the owner of social network Facebook, announced that it had signed a 20-year nuclear energy agreement with US-based energy company Constellation Energy to ensure electricity supply from a nuclear plant in Illinois.
Meta said under the agreement, an unspecified investment by Meta would replace Illinois state subsidies to keep the Clinton Clean Energy Center operational beginning in 2027.
Through this project, the Clinton Center will provide 1,121 megawatts of nuclear energy to support Meta's regional operations, while adding 30 megawatts of incremental capacity to the grid.
Meta emphasized that as it looks to future energy needs to fuel Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, the company recognizes the immense value of nuclear energy in providing stable and sustainable electricity.
The deal marks the latest move by tech giant Meta to meet rising electricity demand due to AI, with giants Microsoft, Google and Amazon also turning to nuclear power as a source of energy.
These developments come as tech companies compete to secure clean, stable energy sources to power energy-hungry AI data centers.
Nuclear power has gained renewed attention as companies and governments seek reliable, carbon-free electricity to meet climate goals while supporting growing electricity demand from data centers and AI operations.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data center electricity consumption is expected to double by 2030, creating significant challenges to ensuring sufficient energy as AI adoption accelerates./.
