According to court documents obtained by People , pop star Miley Cyrus' attorney dismissed the copyright infringement claim filed by Tempo Music Investments in September 2024.
Miley Cyrus' legal team argued that Tempo Music Investments only owns part of Bruno Mars' ballad through co-writer Philip Lawrence.

However, the other co-writers of When I Was Your Man , Ari Levine and Andrew Wyatt, are not affiliated with Tempo Music Investments, and the singer's attorney argued that "only exclusive rights holders can sue for copyright infringement".
The See You Again singer's lawyer added: "The assignee is only a co-author, so he does not have exclusive rights and therefore does not have the right to sue."
Miley Cyrus' legal team asked for the lawsuit to be dismissed.
In September 2024, a lawsuit obtained by TMZ alleged that the Hannah Montana actress's Grammy-winning hit and songs by Bruno Mars, 39, share "numerous musical similarities," including the harmonies, choruses, melodies and chord progressions.
Tempo Music Investments also argued that Miley Cyrus (32 years old) also "intentionally" took inspiration from the song Talking to Moon by Bruno Mars (not a plaintiff in the lawsuit).

Flowers won Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards in February 2024.
"This award is amazing. I really hope it doesn't change anything, because my life is still beautiful. Not everyone in the world gets a Grammy, but everyone in this world is amazing, so don't think this is important," the singer shared with the audience in her acceptance speech.
Miley Cyrus wrote the song Flowers about her failed marriage to ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, with whom she lived from 2018 to 2020. The Wrecking Ball singer released the song on January 12, 2023, hours before Liam Hemsworth's 33rd birthday.
