Thai jackfruit price drops to less than 1 thousand VND/kg but still difficult to sell

According to jackfruit farmers in Dong Nai province, currently 100kg of Thai jackfruit sold at the garden is only 50-70 thousand VND. The buyers are mainly retailers or people who buy it for animal feed because there are almost no traders who buy in large quantities to supply the export market.

The unprecedented drop in jackfruit prices, down to only 1-2 thousand VND/kg, has been going on since the beginning of June. Not only Thai jackfruit but also red-fleshed jackfruit, which used to be a specialty and sold for 120 thousand VND/kg, is now only priced at 12-13 thousand VND/kg.

The main reason for the sharp drop in jackfruit prices is the difficulty of the export market, especially the main consumer market, China, which is restricting imports. Meanwhile, the domestic market is slow to consume because this time coincides with the summer fruit harvest, the abundant fruit supply increases the competitive pressure between fruit products. The whole province currently has more than 9,500 hectares of jackfruit with a total output of more than 80,400 tons/year. With the current price, jackfruit farmers in the province are suffering heavy losses.
