In recent days, floods on the Mekong mainstream have increased sharply, combined with rising water levels upstream of the Mekong River, causing high tides to exceed historical levels. This shows that the weather at the end of 2025 will be complicated for the Mekong Delta provinces, including Vinh Long .

Reporters of Vinh Long Newspaper, Radio and Television interviewed Mr. Truong Hoang Giang - Director of the Provincial Hydrometeorological Station about the weather situation, floods, and high tides in the coming time.

High tides cause many impacts affecting life, production, and infrastructure such as flooding, dyke landslides, etc.

- Director of the Provincial Hydrometeorological Station - Truong Hoang Giang: The main flood on the Mekong River mainstream in 2025 is one of the biggest floods in the past 10 years, specifically in Kratie and Tonle Sap Lake of Cambodia reaching nearly 21.7m; at Tonle Sap Lake also nearly 1.2m higher than the same period in 2024; for the upstream area of the Mekong River, the peak flood level in Tan Chau reached 3.91m (October 9), 0.09m below alert level III.

In Chau Doc, it reached 3.48m, almost equivalent to the flood peak in 2018; the flood period this year also lasted longer than the same period in 2024. Up to now, the water level in Tan Chau has remained at 3.6m on BĐ I. In Vinh Long, it is also affected by floods combined with high tides, causing flooding in many places.

- In the province, there have also been times of high water levels due to floods combined with high tides. Specifically, at My Thuan on October 9, the peak water level reached 2.26m, 0.09m higher than the historical water level in 2022 (2.17m); at Cho Lach station, it reached 2.16m, 0.07m higher than the historical water level.

The problem of water levels exceeding historical peaks as high as this year is caused by a combination of many factors. The time from October 8-9 (ie August 17-18 in the lunar calendar) is the time of peak tides + flood peaks + relatively large rainfall in the basin, all of which combine to cause historical water levels at the above stations.

- Up to this point, the water level at stations on the mainstream of the Mekong River is still maintained at a high level, the water level in the upstream areas of the Mekong Delta also has more storage than the same period in 2024, according to the law that by the end of the year, the water level at coastal stations such as Binh Dai (Cua Dai); An Thuan (Ham Luong River); Ben Trai (Co Chien River) will increase even higher than present and exceed level III, which will cause many unwanted impacts on life, production, infrastructure such as flooding, dyke erosion... These high tides will last until the first months of 2026.

- Since the beginning of the year, there have been 12 storms in the East Sea. Although they did not directly land in the Southern region and Vinh Long, each time they indirectly caused rain, thunderstorms, and local flooding in the province.

From now until the end of the year, these types of weather will continue and especially according to experience, towards the end of the year, due to the influence of cold air, storms often tend to move south, with an axis close to the Southern region, so we need to be vigilant and prepare early.

- Forecasting agencies need to continuously monitor dangerous weather and hydrological developments, improve forecasting capacity, and proactively inform authorities and people about natural disaster situations.

For functional agencies such as the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue; the Steering Committee for Civil Defense and all levels and sectors, prepare scenarios and response plans for each type of natural disaster to avoid being passive and confused.

For people, proactively monitor weather and hydrological information on mass media and provincial propaganda agencies, comply with local government's disaster response plans, be proactive in aquaculture production, and reinforce dykes and ponds.
