On September 21, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan and a delegation of the Ministry of Health visited and worked at the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center, inspecting the implementation of the rotation model of specialist doctors from Ho Chi Minh City to work here.

At the meeting, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan acknowledged and commended the efforts of the leadership, staff, doctors and nurses of Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center.

According to the Minister, taking care of the health of people in coastal and island areas, especially in Con Dao special zone - an area with a particularly important strategic position, not only has social security significance but also contributes to strengthening people's trust in the care of the Party, State and the health sector.

The initial effectiveness of the model of rotating specialist doctors to work in Con Dao shows that this is a practical solution, suitable for the current conditions of Con Dao, and at the same time a way to narrow the gap in quality of medical services between the mainland and the island.

The Minister also requested the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health to continue to maintain the rotation of specialist doctors to work in Con Dao, while increasing technology transfer and training on-site staff to improve the quality of healthcare on the island.

Regarding the difficulties, problems and proposals and recommendations of the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, the Minister of Health said that the Ministry will coordinate with Ho Chi Minh City to find solutions or propose to competent authorities to resolve them, with the goal of best serving the task of health care for officers, soldiers and people on remote islands.

Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center was established in 2005, performing the task of examining and treating people, as well as ensuring medical care for officers and soldiers of the armed forces stationed on the island, fishermen and tourists.

In April 2025, the new investment project of Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center phase one with a floor area of about 9,294 m2, 5 floors high with a scale of 60 beds, a total investment of nearly 250 billion VND was inaugurated and officially put into use at the end of August 2025.

The center currently has 73 staff, civil servants and workers, including 16 doctors with 5 functional departments, 7 clinical and paraclinical departments, and an infection control team. In the first 9 months of 2025, there were over 16,600 people coming for medical examination and treatment.

Implementing the plan to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment at the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center, from September 3rd to now, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has organized the first phase of a rotation program for specialist doctors to work in Con Dao.

Since implementing this program, the number of people coming to the Center for medical examination and treatment has increased by 67% compared to August 2025; the number of inpatient treatments has increased by 75%; and bed occupancy has increased by 72%.

In particular, the specialists have coordinated to successfully perform 8 surgeries, including many complicated cases that were successfully performed for the first time right in Con Dao special zone, reducing the need to transfer to the mainland. Thereby, helping people save time, travel costs and receive better health care. This also marks an important milestone, affirming the practical effectiveness of the program of rotating specialist doctors to work in Con Dao.
