Is myopia surgery covered by health insurance?

Pursuant to Article 23 of the 2008 Law on Health Insurance and amendments and supplements in Clause 16, Article 1 of the 2014 Law on Health Insurance, there are 12 cases where health insurance participants will not be entitled to health insurance even if they go to the right medical facility for examination and treatment.

Firstly, the cost portion in the case specified in Clause 1, Article 21 has been paid by the state budget.

The second is the case of nursing and convalescence at a nursing and convalescent facility.

Third is when going for a medical checkup.

Fourth, when testing and diagnosing pregnancy, it is not for treatment purposes.

Fifth, patients use assisted reproductive techniques, family planning services, abortion, except in cases where pregnancy must be terminated due to pathological causes of the fetus or the mother.

The 6th is for health insurance participants using cosmetic services.

Saturday is for patients with strabismus, myopia and refractive errors of the eye, except for children under 6 years old.

The 8th is for health insurance participants to use replacement medical supplies including artificial limbs, artificial eyes, dentures, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and mobility aids in medical examination, treatment, and rehabilitation.

The 9th is medical examination, treatment, and rehabilitation in case of disaster.

The 10th is medical examination and treatment of drug addiction, alcohol addiction or other addictive substances.

The 11th is for health insurance participants to go for medical examination, forensic examination, and forensic psychiatric examination.

The 12th is to participate in clinical trials and scientific research.

Thus, according to current regulations, health insurance only covers cases of surgery to treat strabismus and refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism) in children under 6 years old. Patients over 6 years old will not be covered by health insurance.
