Expanding access to advanced cancer treatments

Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital and Johnson & Johnson Vietnam Company Limited have just signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cooperation in the prevention and treatment of lung cancer and prostate cancer to improve cancer treatment in Vietnam.

The event demonstrates the commitment of both parties to apply innovative medical solutions to improve the quality of life of Vietnamese people, while expanding access to advanced treatments through close collaboration with the domestic healthcare system.

Accordingly, the Memorandum of Understanding will focus on optimizing treatment regimens for lung cancer and prostate cancer, thereby improving processes, enhancing the experience and treatment outcomes for patients.

The cooperation contents include: raising awareness and diagnosing EGFR exon 20 insertion mutations in NSCLC (a biomarker in lung cancer); expanding the application of next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques, promoting knowledge exchange and medical training, and improving the capacity of medical staff in applying new therapies.

At the same time, promoting multidisciplinary coordination with the participation of oncologists, surgeons, surgeons, radiologists, clinical pharmacists and nurses to bring about comprehensive care. In addition, the Memorandum of Understanding also strengthens the referral system between Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital and 13 satellite hospitals in the Mekong Delta, Southeast and Central regions, helping patients have the opportunity to receive earlier and more accurate diagnosis.

Mr. Upendra Patkie, General Director of Johnson & Johnson Vietnam, said that through the memorandum of understanding, the company will help patients across the country have the opportunity to expand access to advanced therapies, strengthen professional capacity, and improve quality of life. At the same time, it strives to transform cancer care and build a healthier future in Vietnam.

According to Globalcan statistics, lung cancer ranks third in the number of new cases among cancers in Vietnam, with more than 24,000 new cases in 2022. It is also the second leading cause of cancer death, with more than 22,000 deaths each year.

In addition, prostate cancer is increasingly becoming a disease of concern for men in Vietnam. In 2022, nearly 5,900 new cases were recorded, making this disease one of the five most common cancers for men and accounting for about 2.3% of cancer deaths.
