In 2016, Mr. Tuyen quit his job as a coal miner in Bac Giang and returned to his hometown to start his own business. With the capital he had saved from his days as a coal miner, combined with a bank loan, he bid for a 20,000m2 plot of low-lying rice paddies in the commune, built embankments, raised fish, planted trees, constructed roads, and installed electricity.
Initially, he bought cows and calves to raise, then sold them to people in the commune, and also raised fish in three ponds, including tilapia, grass carp, and common carp. At that time, the profit from his herd of 25 cows reached about 200-250 million VND/year; and from fish farming about 200 million VND/year.
The model of an industrial duck farm belonging to Mr. Phan Trung Tuyến's family in Đồng Cẩm commune (Kim Thành district, Hải Dương province) is built on the surface of a pond.
Realizing that cattle farming was hard work and low-profit, he switched to raising ducks in 2020. After being introduced to an industrial duck farming model that would allow for faster market readiness compared to free-range ducks, he researched and built duck coops on the surface of a pond; at the same time, he continued to raise free-range ducks in his existing rice paddies.
"Industrial-scale ducks raised in cages need to maintain a temperature that depends on the weather conditions, and their bathing, eating, and sleeping schedules must also be scientifically planned ," Mr. Tuyen said.
His family's duck coop is an open type; in the summer, they use fans for cooling and take advantage of natural breezes, ensuring a clean water source. In the winter, they design a covered area with tarpaulin to keep the ducks warm. He also cleans the coop daily.
Mr. Tuyen's innovative approach to fish farming is building duck coops on top of the pond, utilizing the duck droppings as fish feed. However, not all fish species are suitable for duck droppings. Since 2023, he has introduced basa fish fry into the pond and found them to thrive. He only spent about 20 million VND to buy 10,000 fingerlings to release into the duck pond, without incurring additional costs for fish feed. After 1.5 years, he earned nearly 600 million VND from the basa fish.
"Raising any animal involves risks, and ducks are no exception. The important thing is finding solutions and ways to overcome them," Mr. Tuyen shared. According to Mr. Tuyen, when raising ducks, it's necessary to pay attention to feeding, medication, and weather conditions. He has to remember the schedule for each flock to plan vaccinations and feeding accordingly. In addition, he closely monitors the weather to prevent diseases in the ducks.
Each year, the duck flock generates a profit of approximately 600 million VND.
The ducks he raises are arranged in a continuous cycle, so he sells about 12,000 ducks each month. Mr. Tuyen's family ducks are sold in several neighboring provinces and cities such as Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, and Bac Giang. Each year, the duck farm generates a profit of approximately 600 million VND. This duck farm also provides seasonal employment for some local workers, with an income of about 600,000 VND per day.
In addition, since the early days of establishing the model, he has planted 1,000 Ben Tre Siamese coconut trees. To date, each tree yields about 50-70 coconuts per year, and he sells both fresh coconuts and coconuts for offerings during Tet (Lunar New Year).
In 2023, Mr. Tuyen was one of 14 outstanding young entrepreneurs honored by the Provincial Youth Union and the Provincial Federation of Youth Associations.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh, Secretary of the Kim Thanh District Youth Union, assessed that Mr. Tuyen's garden-pond-livestock model is one of the typical rural youth entrepreneurship models in the district. With a spirit of eagerness to learn and not afraid of difficulties and hardships, Mr. Tuyen has overcome challenges to successfully start a business in agriculture. At the same time, he has also inspired passion and shared experiences with many other young people in starting and developing their businesses, contributing to building a prosperous and strong homeland.
